What is the term for movies like this?

Speaking to the style of a movie where music and camera work are strongly used to set a particular mood in lieu of dialog or situations.

I have seen a few films like this and I don't particularly like the feeling I get that I am being manipulated without the film having earned that right, especially when it happens at the beginning as it does in this one (I couldn't make it past five minutes due to this).

Anyone know what I'm getting at, and know what this style is called (if there is a term for it)?

Not defending this movie, but I'm a bit shocked that someone would dismiss strong music/cinematography that can stand without dialogue, as being manipulative of the audience.

It's just another aspect of the medium.

It's called the movie having "atmosphere", and this movie had a lot of it, I loved it.

Psychological thriller, possibly sci-fi thriller also.

This movie was excellent imo, and I believe will become a sleeper hit.

Excellent... really? (SPOILERS AHEAD) I agree it could have been excellent... But this movie didn't dig way deep enough to become excellent... To me this is a movie that was beautifully shot and presented an interesting premise... Some very good performances especially Florence Pugh... Didn't think Harry Styles was very good... but when it finally was begining to get interesting it ended...

It is just not believable (without further explanation) that an operation like this could work... Are no familly members looking for these woman... This operation has a public website (so must we just assume the everyone who has contacted them has agreed to participate or decided to keep their mouth shut to the police/authorities etc. when they found out what the Victory Project really is... Why can the woman come back when they are killed but not the men... And the red men seems to come out of nowhere but the can't catch Alice when she is heading for the exit... Why not keep the exit guarded - seems stupid that people can just walk/drive up there (do they really count on a couple of warning signs being enough)...

I could probably find many other issues... So again this could have been great but ended up being very mediocre...

"Why not keep the exit guarded" good point.
And I can't get over that Harry Styles forced dancing scene which was never explained, other than it being a dumb power demo by Pine.

reply

Yeah that dancing scene was awful... I guess it kind of tried to explain that Chris Pine's character was in total control of the men... but that could have been explained way better...
