If Phil Had Been Straight...

I doubt he would've been so upset about George & Rose getting married.

The fact that he was a closeted gay man seemed to really fan the fires of his resentment toward Rose whose arrival disturbed the atmosphere of the ranch in his eyes.

reply

Well, it is true that she was using George.
Nothing wrong with that, he was using her too probably for sex.
A good reason to get married back then. And nowadays.

reply

Relationships are funny things. They can start out as one thing and become something else. At that time, there were probably plenty of couples who initially married for personal interests and eventually grew to truly love each other.

reply

All true.
Buy also true is what Phil said about her motives.

reply

Indeed. As a single mother, Rose was certainly interested in financial security.

reply

The actors playing this couple are together in real life, so the looks argument doesn't work for those saying she could only have married him for money. I think she was lonely and sad after her alcoholic husband died, and George showed her kindness that led to love.

reply

Can't hardly blame George - I imagine life with just Phil was a daily nightmare.

I'd have married a houseplant if it would have given me time away from him.

reply

Nah, they loved each other and George respected Phil, no matter how rude he was.

reply

It’s not like she pursued George. He drove regularly to see her. He even pretended to be a waiter just to cheer her up.

I think they genuinely loved each other.
