It is just me or I though Anthony Hopkins was really bad?

Don't get me wrong, I loved his performance as Hannibal. So, I just watched it now.. The way he speaks is really annoying and his acting was okay, but still almost nothing fits his role as Hitchcock. Helen Mirren was excellent in it though.

I was excited to see this film because Hitchcock is one of my favorite directors. But yes, something was just "off" about Anthony Hopkins performance. Great actor, but he just wasn't able to do Hitch.

For one thing, he had his voice all wrong. Alfred Hitchcock had one of the most recognizable voices in the movie world and Hopkins just couldn't pull it off.

I saw a documentary on the making of "North by Northwest" and Martin Landau was in it. He talked about Hitchcock and did a perfect impression of his voice. I thought "Hitchcock" should have been dubbed by him.

Yeah, they were looking at a big name actor.
Timothy Spall may have been considered for that part, but nobody knows who he is though.

Spall is a fine actor who can be very good indeed in downtrodden everyman roles such as his work with Mike Leigh... but I cannot see him as Hitchcock. His Churchill in The King’s Speech was an embarrassing caricature.

He was dreadful in this film - a completely one-dimensional waxworks Hitchcock. Helen Mirren was the saving grace - she was very good and made a mediocre film worth sitting through.
