Is it because of Affleck's connection to Weinstein that this movie is tanking?

I can't think of any other reason. If so man, I surely underestimated the fury of the movie going audience.

Extremely unlikely, most people wanting to see this are not going to skip it because Affleck is associated to Weinstein just like 90% of hollywood is. It would take more work to find someone that isn't associated to him either as friend, business partner, career booster, film producer, victim, etc..

Its failing is primarily its association to BvS and the other not well liked DC films.

reply

True. Disliked prequels sure have effects on their sequels- no matter how great they may be or not be.

290 mill on its opening weekend is not a tank. But it surely is on the receiving end a trash talking. I cannot figure it out either. The campaign made against it in the media... RT, Movieweb etc. seem to have a none trivial effect.

The hardcore fans of both DC and Marvel will always go see these flicks, I believe. But the soft-core and main-streamers are highly influenced from such medias and I get the feeling the haters (for lack of a better word) are not so harmless afterall.

A shame as I think even those who dislike DC or just JL really would collectively gain much more joy from an overall BO success from both Marvel and DC. As a comic book fan myself, I know I enjoy even those that sort of stink - not that JL in anyway is a stinker. I was royally entertained and will go see it a second time for sure.

I think the problem here is the films have largely not been good and whether people want them to continue along this track. SO if big box office continues bad movies,,,,should you really want that? 1 out of 5 films being good is not a great record.

reply

I like them (except SS). But, poor BO seem to have long lasting effects. Too long which I is why I wish for the best for all.

Look at Superman. We waited 19 years between Superman IV and Superman Returns, and then another 7 years to MOS.... to wait another 19 or 7 or 26 years to a reboot of JL or Superman is not in our favour, I think (Marvel and DC fans allike).

So alternately, I would rather they keep at it at try and improve. It is sure that they do listen. Clearly DC is trying a more Marvel type way of movie storytelling with their latest two WW and JL... so they do try and satisfy the roar. IMO I would rather they kept at Snyders ambitions, but I am a minority here...

So the way I see it is: We have to options:

1: to risk waiting for several of years - even decades, and who knows how this waiting will improve anything?
or
2: to keep at it and learn along the way

For example, I think "Thor 2" was really weak, and yet I am thrilled this did not stop them... as Thor 3 is great. Their version of the character has grown since his first outing, and I dare say they went for the crazy Ragnarrock story because the second one with a more classic storyline critically tanked... so keep at it, I say, and learn through the process.

Keep feeding us nerds and comics book fans :) Something is better than nothing.

You see what I mean?

reply

I see what you mean. What I would like to see is them slow down and stop dumping tons of money into low quality films. I am not suggesting they stop entirely. Just refocus on key characters and drop the huge slate based on a poor foundation and forced interconnected universe. WW worked, continue. Batman solo film should work. See how Aquaman lands and perhaps based on that go with Flash and possibly a better written closer to the comic version of MOS2. Maybe try a low budget Harley Quinn film rather than a team movie that may cost mountains of money and then have to have huge box office to recover it. Start building a solid foundation of a few films over time to grow on rather than a large slate of bad films saturating the DC universe.

reply

Amen to that :) And our interests is fueling the industry, even when projects underperfrom I believe. So hopefully and I think not unlikely, you will get what you wish for.

I find hilarious [DC fans] coming up with excuses for the movie being a FLOP.

It's a flop... because the movie is REALLY BAD!

simple, yes?

reply

Nope I saw the film and in my eyes it's tanking cuz it sucked

reply

no

It’s definitely a reason for some to steer clear. Not for me though.
