"House of Dragons" is coming to HBO!

And I think it's a terrible idea!

Yes, the series has been ordered, and will be made. I love "GoT" passionately (or 7/8ths of it, anyway), and am not thrilled.

IMHO the events of the Targaryan Conquest are too close to the events of "GoT", everything that happens is going to see trivial compared to the extinction-level threat that's coming up in a few generations. Plus the whole thing is mapped out in GRRM's history-of-Westeros book "Fire and Blood", and the book is entertaining enough, but it didn't make the events of that time sound exciting. And like any geek, I will be OUTRAGED if they don't stick to the canonical events of the book.

It would be cool if they start in Valyria before the Targs departed for Westeros and show the Doom at some point in the series.

I got about 20 pages into Fire and Blood and then I lost track of all the characters. I wuldn't mind watching it on tv but if all the characters are just Dany and her brother with different actors then I will probably pass.

Putting the "Fire and Blood" stuff on TV will certainly help the biggest problem of the book, was that it was written like a history textbook and all the characters and wars sounded very similar. If we see everything acted out, the names will begin to belong to people we can identify, and hopefully it'll have much more emotional impact than the dry tone of the book allows.

I didn't have a problem with the book, but then, I read that sort of non-fiction book for fun now and then. I've got a book on the Plantagenet kings of England that I just finished re-reading a couple of weeks ago, that is written in exactly that style.

"non-fiction." Very good! I know what you mean though.

reply

Hey, the Plantagenet book is genuine non-fiction!

"Fire and Blood" is fake non-fiction, a very rare genre.

I need to be able to put a grin emoji here!
