I kept checking to see if my DVR was stuck in fast forward

The end of last episode, the showdown that has been building since the very first scene of the series finally takes place and they prevail over the Night King, saving all of humanity, but at great cost. Hooray. At the end of the *very next episode*, that decimated army has made it all the way down to King's Landing (losing a dragon along the way) to have another showdown, this time with Cersei. Game of Thrones is supposed to be a saga, and they are telling it at the pace of a children's short story

So far all of Season 8 could have fit in Season 7, and still have room for more episodes, that's how accelerated everything is right now. I have no idea why HBO wants to kill their prime show. It's the talk of the town and they just want it over.

"It's too expensive" if that is the reason, is not an excuse. HBO has way more money now than it did in 2010 & 2011 when it was prepping Season 1.

"The actors want to move on" isn't an excuse either. They're part of the most talked about and most popular show of all time, they don't want to leave, and they don't want to lose their jobs.

I've heard that Weiss and Benioff are quite burned out after seven seasons of shepherding this juggernaut to its conclusion. I think at this point EVERYBODY is ready to move on.

Besides, HBO has the spin-offs in the works so it's not like they're really leaving behind the world of GoT.

hope patchface gets a spin off show

Its a saga and wouldn't work focusing on one character. Patchface is an interesting and dark character and wouldn't mind seeing him though. They are planning spinoffs, but the one they choose to go with should have plenty of GRRM source material to lean on. Without that, I think it will fail as the HBO writers have repeatedly demonstrated they can't create in GRRMs universe.
