Any former IMDb Mad Men posters here?

It was my favorite board, and I greatly miss the "regulars" who posted there, even after the show ended.

Anyone else here?

JHines, Bailey, anyone?

Thus far, this site looks to me the most promising to make it home of all the others.

reply

I'm very much a fan. I still watch it on Netflix.

Nice to see you, MissMargo, and BwbPhile :)

I don't recognize either of your names, but I suppose that doesn't matter; we have a bond in our mutual appreciation of MM.

Miss Margo, I've watched the series innumerable times now, each time gaining more insight and understanding than I had before. It's an amazingly deep, content-rich show. More than any other I've ever seen. It changed the way I watched TV (and film, for that matter), forever. Too bad most TV shows, and films, don't warrant such close watching.

BwbPhile, I agree it'll be fun to see MovieChat grow. I just hope the regular posters I knew and will miss from the MM board (and others) will find themselves here, because I truly will miss them if they don't.

I haven't bought any of the MM sets because all I care about is seeing the show, which I've already downloaded to my drive. I don't want anything to do with Amazon anymore and will find alternatives (easy enough to do). But thanks.

Oh, I agree! Going back and watching episodes again, I have gained new insight into some of the character's motives in doing the things they have done.
You get drawn into these people's lives. Some may be more unlovable than most but you can't help caring about each of them. Even now, I think of them sometimes and wonder what may have happened to them beyond the last episode...... what became of Don's kids?
I wouldn't mind knowing.

I have to say though that I have a special spot in my heart for this show simply because I would have been around Sally's age in that time period.
The creators and everyone involved got the time periods right.

reply

"You get drawn into these people's lives. Some may be more unlovable than most but you can't help caring about each of them."

Exactly! In the first few episodes, I didn't like any of the characters, with the possible exception of Peggy. I never expected I'd come to care about Don, or Pete, and yet, I did. The writers and the actors did such an amazing job of character development.

reply

I've watched it so many times now over the years, most likely all that's left for me now is to watch Season 7 again, even though I've already seen it 3 or more times. It's such an amazingly dense, content-rich show, it's impossible to get it all in one -- or even two, or more -- viewings. This is why it forever changed my viewing habits, although certainly most shows (or films) don't warrant such close attention.

Bwt, not to worry. I have all episodes copied to my hard drive, and will not purchase anything, particularly from Amazon, after what they've pulled on their (formerly) loyal customers. I have zero loyalty now, and a great deal of animus towards both IMDb and Amazon. Used to be an Amazon customer, but will be no longer. Money = mouth.

Still hope to hear from other former IMDb Mad Men boardies, or those who were lurkers, or any combination thereof. Thanks to those of you who've already responded :)

reply

I don't think I ever really posted on the MM boards while IMDb was still alive (:p), but I am a fan! I'm due for a rewatch though, I'll admit....

reply

I look forward to your posts/threads after you've finished your rewatch :)

Mad Men is the richest, most detailed and nuanced show I've yet to have seen, and there's no way all of this can be caught by just one (or two, or even three) viewings of each episode. Not even by the brightest and most observant of viewers. There's simply too much to it that isn't obvious at first (or second, or third, or even fourth). This is why it's beyond any question my favorite show. Even having watched it from the beginning, multiple times, and being an observant viewer, there are SO many subtleties I missed and only caught after many viewings. I'm sure even now, having seen it as many times as I have, there are still things I missed. I LOVE this about this show!

reply

Catbookss, I bookmarked a U.S. inflation calculator. So when I watch Mad Men I can adjust any money they mention into today's money. Gives you a better idea of what kind of money was made and or spent. FYI I bought the box set before Brand X movie site dumped us off their message board.

Ha, I did the same thing! It's fun seeing what the dollar amounts then would be now. Like Don's giving Megan that million.

reply

Very nice write up! I watch sooo many things though it's hard for me to sit down and do an entire rewatch for a whole series. It'll just have to be gradual, but that doesn't mean I can't participate. I have seen it still, though! I probably just don't remember it as well as a lot of you do.

This is what happens when you're a tv junkie :p You end up juggling a lot!

reply

You're so lucky, Dreamers. For me there are very few shows that catch my interest, and I WISH that weren't the case.

For instance, right now, there's not a single show (or film, for that matter) that I'm interested in or enthusiastic about seeing :/.

I am looking forward to season 4 of Halt and Catch Fire, but that's the only thing I can think of.

reply

Oh, that's too bad. I really think TV has hit its stride, so I'm riding high on that wave, lol. What kinds of shows did you use to watch?

reply

I think so too. The quality has never been as high as it's been in the last 10 or so years. Unfortunately for me, I'm not into zombies or serial killers or vampires or anything like that.

Mad Men and HACF have been the only two shows I've truly loved. Watched Homeland, Bones, Ray Donovan, Bloodline, Bates Motel and some others, but didn't love them.

reply

Some of those are still on, did you just stop watching them?

Hm, sounds like you aren't into fantasy or anything too hyper-real and/or surreal. Did you ever get into Breaking Bad? Fargo? The Americans? A lot of FXs line up is solid and might be more in your pool of preferences. Just a few suggestions if you're looking to get into something else!

However, if you're content to just share a few more drinks with Don Draper, that's cool too! I'm sure no one here would fault ya on that one ;)

reply

Yeah, I lost interest in them. Mad Men spoiled me!

reply

Oh wow, the love is strong with this one! haha...hey, when ya find something good, ya stick with it!

I probably could afford to watch a little less :P

Hi 9! Aw, I wish you'd posted. I lurked for about a year, without registering, so I do understand. Anyway, glad you're here!

Same for me, that board was a *huge* part of my Mad Men life. Heh, yes, I remember the weekly new "should I start watching this show?" threads, and the ones saying BB was much better than MM.

I also remember when the show was airing, people on the east coast would start posting about what happened -- often enough even during the show, on commercial breaks. I'm on the west coast, so it would drive me nuts not having seen it, and not being able to go to the board (I often failed miserably at that, LOL!). By the time it aired here, new posts from that night would go back as far as 3 pages! I'm sure you remember that too :)

I understand what you mean by the rich reading, but for me anyway there came a point where I felt I had to join in the conversation. It took about a year! Maybe a bit less, maybe even a bit more, don't remember now exactly.

Oh yes, that hour flew by. I could hardly believe how quickly time sped up when I was watching the show live. And that I was also annoyed by being given only 7 episodes at a time for the last two "seasons" :/

I sincerely hope that the old regulars, as well as new viewers, will find their way here. I loved the way the regulars stuck around on the IMDb board, as well as new or newer viewers posted their thoughts, or asked clarifying questions.

reply

You rang, cat? ;)

reply

Doug! So glad you found your way to the lifeboat :D

How did you find out about MovieChat?

reply

You know how the grapevines are, cat. Not exactly Napa Valley of course but serviceable in a pinch. Now the only question is, "Who else survived the blast??!!" :)

reply

As far as I know, the grapevine had been destroyed well before IMDb stated it would be. That's why I asked you how you'd heard of this site. If you prefer not to answer, well, that's your choice.

A poster on the General boards here said something like this is having survived a natural disaster (or human-made, for that matter), where we've been left in some kind of apocalyptic dust, with no means to communicate and regroup, except the hope that somehow, someway, we'll find our way here. Not unlike the old Twilight Zone episode with Elizabeth Montgomery and … uh, the other actor, whomever he was.

reply

Well, let me put it like this: Talk/rumor of a “new site” (MovieChat.org) started roughly 17 days as the crow flies before the old chat boards went kaput on the 20th last – or as things worked out sometime late on the 19th. A few days thereafter I went through my favorites list and deleted just about 45 imdb message board links to various movies and television shoes. It was one of those 45 boards, that’s all I can tell you with any certainty.

reply

That's odd, I don't think I got a notification that you'd replied. Or maybe it came in with a slew of others and I just overlooked it.

Anyhow, I only heard mention of this site in the very last two days of IMDb's boards, before they were nuked into oblivion. Lots of others had been mentioned during those final two weeks, which I bookmarked or checked out briefly in the moment. I must have gotten burned out on checking new sites by the time I got to MovieChat.

Did you look at any of the others?

reply

[deleted]

Afternoon, Bwb! Doing well. How are you?

How are you liking tMDb? I haven't registered there, but did check it out here and there for about a week.

Ugh, deleting a lot of my posts didn't make any difference, because they're still nested. Sorry about that.

reply

[deleted]

Ugh, sorry to hear that Bwb. No wonder you weren't getting better. What are you supposed to do to get rid of walking pneumonia?

reply

[deleted]

More antibiotics? Ugh. Be sure to buy some probiotics and take them daily. This is your second course within a short period of time.

This is also my second course of antibiotics within about a month and a half. My doctor insisted I take probiotics to counteract the ill effects of this. Unfortunately I couldn't get out to buy them until this week, but I have to take them for the next few months because antibiotics kill both the bad AND the good, the latter of which are critical for our immune systems.

I *hate* doctors, always have. But the one I have now is EXTREMELY smart, and is not only well versed in traditional western medicine, but is smart enough to realize (and has been schooled in) various vitamins, minerals, etc play a critical part in our health. I promise you it's not just a whacky thang ;)

reply

[deleted]

Isolation?! Jebuz. I do n't know what c-diff is. Will have to Google, but if it made shingles a walk in the park by comparison, it must have been awful.

Okay, glad to hear you're not only on probiotics but have doubled up, and eating yogurt on top of it.

Don't know what SIX is, but am glad you're enjoying it and, most of all, beginning to feel better!

So glad you were able to see your doc yesterday, who's put you back on the path to wellness :)

I'm so sorry. No wonder you watch a lot of TV. You're unfailingly polite and nice to converse with. I thank you for that.

Since you said you'd missed a lot of shows during the past few decades, and like quirky shows, have you seen Six Feet Under? You might enjoy that one :)

If you mean other sites like "IMDb 2.0" or whatever the name is, no I didn't - nor any of the others thrown about.

I didn't get a notice of your reply either, but it may be too soon since the reply is only about 10 minutes old.

I wasn't a regular, but I liked to stop by to ask and contribute. Glad this website exists because it's the closest thing to a replacement

reply

Great to see you here, Zero, welcome!

As time goes on, I'm coming to love MovieChat even more than I liked IMDb. It has cool features IMBd didn't, like the Trending section on the home page, so you can immediately see which boards have been recently posted on, and has very few trolls.

Plus, I've discovered many films and shows I'd have never known about had I not seen them via the Trending section. Wish we had a Watch List, so I could pop them on it and not risk forgetting the titles.

I do miss many of the regulars from the old Mad Men board (which was surprisingly active, long after the show ended), and several other boards. But on the plus side, I've met a lot of great new people here.

reply

I'm loving this new format too. I sure hope the trolls stay ignorant of this place's existence as well but we can never be too confident with that right? I also tried Reddit's movie pages but they're too disjointed and I don't like the limited reply time because I've found some interesting topics from 2 - 3 years ago but you can't make any replies.

reply

I waited till the start of this final season of HACF before I looked for where all the former IMDB people went. Is this the place or is there somewhere else? I'm glad to see your moniker once again on my screen chatting!

reply

I dunno. I couldn't find anyone on any of the other sites. Unless some made their way to PreviouslyTV.

I'm very happy to see you here too!

reply

I was a lurker, but did post every great once in a while on the "Mad Men" IMDb boards when the show was still on the air.

I remember responding to somebody once a few years ago. We were discussing the issue of tobacco and why so many people smoked back then. I must have said something offensive and my thread was deleted after being reported. I kinda stopped after that until the finale.

Speaking of, I have that tune from the old Coke commercial stuck in my head now, LOL!

"I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony

Da da da da..."

reply

Hi! I was an occasional poster (clunybrown2011) but followed the board on a daily basis. It was a great board and I fondly remember many of the posters to this day. Boo/hiss to IMDB for disbanding the boards :(

Utpe: I remember a thread on tobacco, probably several threads on that topic over the years.

I'm now re-watching MM on Audience channel (Direct TV). They're doing one episode a day. It's like having a little gift waiting for me each and every day. Looking forward to hanging out here :)

reply

Now your name I remember! Nothing specific, but your name is familiar.

What posters do you remember? JHines, BaileyTheDog, Dudestein, Tabitha (I think that was her name, or something like it), others whose names escape me at the moment. There was one guy whose name started with a U, I believe, who didn't post a lot, but regularly. My god, he remembered *every little last thing* about the show, and the most subtle of all the subtle nuances. There are others I remember, but not their names, and no doubt many others I've forgotten.

At this point I've seen the show too many times to start rewatching it again yet, but I totally understand your feeling of having a little gift waiting for you each day.

reply

Hi, Catbookss! I do remember your name. I remember all of the above posters that you mentioned, except for Tabitha (probably with some prompting I'd remember). I particularly remember FeloniusMonk (or something like that) and 2HelenBack or ToHelenBack. I'm still working my way through my DVR'd Mad Men from the Audience Channel. What's great is that there are no commercials whatsoever so I'm saving stress and duress to my fastforwarding finger.

Over the years I've seen every episode about 5-6 times and am still finding things that I hadn't noticed before. I'm also finding that I'm reacting differently to some characters. Roger was always my favorite (and still is) but now I'm more acutely aware of his failings.

Anyway, very happy to have found this board.

reply

You must have posted very infrequently, because I don't remember your name. Still, I'm glad you found your way here!

Chances are you didn't say anything wrong. Sometimes all it took back on IMDb was for someone to decide to report a thread, and it didn't matter if no rules were broken. Then other threads and posts could break all kinds of rules 16 ways to Sunday, be reported, and nothing would happen. In other words, the only moderating done there was automated or entirely random.

I wish more of the old crew would find their way here. I lurked for a few years before signing up and posting there, and still miss them. A few have shown up. If IMDb hadn't suddenly and unceremoniously pulled the plug on all the boards, I'm sure many of the regulars would have carried on discussing the finer points of MM, long after the finale. But between the plug being pulled and the show being over, well, not enough motivation.
