Better or Worse than the 2019 remake

I haven't seen this one, but can't imagine it's worse than the 2019 one.

reply

This one is not as good as the 2019 version.

You can't be serious...

reply

Oh, I am very serious...

How is it better

The 2019 Black Christmas was pretty entertaining. It was a smart and fun film with a good cast. I would rate it a 7/10. The 2006 Black Christmas was not as entertaining or as well acted and I would rate it a 6/10.

The 2019 remake was horribly written and didn't even have anything in common with the OG. Nothing about it was smart or fun.

reply

I AGREE WITH HIM.

Explain your reasoning

2019 HAD SOLID CHARACTERS,NARRATIVE,ACTION...IT FAILS A BIT IN THE FINALE...BUT OVERALL ITS LIGHT YEARS BETTER THAN THE 06 REMAKE...WHICH IS EVERYTHING THAT WAS WRONG WITH HORROR FILMS IN THE EARLY 2000S.

reply

LOL that "action" scene at the end was a total copout. You could tell the writers clearly had no idea what to do and decided to just do an action finale and end it.

i thought the 2019 version played like its script had been written by a bot that had been fed a year of intersectional twitter threads. it's really silly & not very well executed imo, but i think it has a goofily incompetent energy that makes it fun to watch.

i haven't seen the 2006 version, but i see it just popped up on tubitv, so i might give it a go tonight.

reply

i watched the 2006 version last night.

i'd say all three films are fairly crap, pretty dull and not noteworthy or memorable.

i'd give the 2019 version a few bonus marks for at least taking a big swing & trying to make some broader culture points. i think it failed at it pretty miserably, but at least it has some distinguishing characteristics.

the 2006 film has a conventionally pretty cast and has some conventional gore and some conventional jumps. it is punch the clock film making and its most punch the clock-iest.

i'd rather watch something that tries hard and fails miserably than watch something that tries nothing and kinda half-heartedly pulls that off.

reminds me of the old truism that great things and awful things have more in common that great and average things, in that to truly make something lasting & memorable, you have to take chances. & when you take chances, sometimes you fall on your ass.

reply

You didn't even like the 1974 one?

reply

not much, no. i've watched it a few times over the years, and i've always found it to be a bit of a numbing bore. i love a lot of the early proto-slashers, but that one does nothing for me.

i'm certainly not the final authority on such matters. obviously it's had some staying power, so some people clearly dig it.

reply

The 2006 one is miles better, outside of the two killer's and ridiculous backstory of the killers, the 2006 movie is pretty good, i love the colors in that movie and how it looks. The 2006 one while its not perfect looked and felt creative, this ones just boring and generic as fuck.

reply

I watched it last night and I agree. It was a bit over the top, but had some awesome kills and gore. Biggest downside was I just hated the characters.

reply

Both 2006 and 2019 were vastly inferior to 1974, so I'd have a hard time picking either.

I'd probably give the nod to 2006 though. Because, I can at least see the point to it from the perspective of it being a remake. 2006 was basically for people who didn't like the ambiguity of the 1974 movie. 1974 BC left you not seeing the killer, and not knowing a hell of a lot about Billy's motivations. You had to piece together what you could about his ramblings about Billy. If you want a film that explains everything and ties it all together, watch the latter. Also, 2006 seemed to follow what a millennial horror movie was like. Putting in graphic/shock moments rather than slowly setting up suspense. I personally much preferred 1974, but that's the point. People tend to prefer one or the other, because they're the same-ish story, but aiming it at a different audience. Sort of feels like the point of a remake.

2019, I'm sure they meant well, and was trying for a feminist message. But I didn't feel it was done to well, and really there was no point to it being a Black Christmas remake. It had very little to do with the original, and could've just been called something else.

Saying that, if done properly 2019 maybe could've been better than 2006.

reply

Lol BC 2006 is a few notches above the latest remake .. the newest one was woke and just dull and pointless

reply

Way better than the 2019 version. No it isn't as good as the original, but it's pretty decent in it's own right.

2019 doesn't have anything redeemable about it.
