Underrated

People label Hostel as "Torture porn", this is highly unfair in my opinion. It´s a movie with a slow build up in the first half and a very gory and suspenseful second half, the whole sequence of Paxtons escape keeps you on the edge of your seat. In the end we also get great revenge. All in all a really good horror movie and one that defined its genre but is often mislabeled by soft people/women.

I just watched it two days ago and I agree. The Saw movies have a stronger emphasis on gore than this. This is more about sheer terror and suspense.

Totally agree. Horror is typically one of my least favorite genres, but I really liked Hostel.

Totally agree. And I'm female.

The movie could have been much better if they removed most of the cheesiness, especially in the first half. That being said, this movie can't work without some of it. I think it's one of the better torture movies and one of the more straightforward, untame, and gory mainstream movies than most. It's totally worth watching.

Hostel Part II on the other hand could have been MUCH better.

I agree I’ve always really liked this movie.

reply

Definitely.

Any time I see people talk about this it's relegated to trashy 'torture porn'. People love to turn their noses up at it, it's considered some post-Saw edgy cash in that is a stain on the genre and of it's time.

I think it has quite a few things going for it. Of course it's gory, then you have plenty of nudity if you like that in a movie and finally the whole set up of being in a foreign country and your pals vanishing is quite terrifying. It's actually quite a great horror movie all in all.
