Well Episode One was certainly depressing. (Spoiler Alert)

Well let's see, it's only Episode One and.....

The crazy brother cuts off his hand, and then later refuses to have it sewn back on. Then the sane one gets attacked by a crazy, horny female translator who steals the manuscript he was paying her to translate. In a flashback, the crazy one jumps out of their car, runs across a four lane road, and jumps into a stream.

Their mother dies of cancer, and their stepfather is an asshole. Then he sees his ex wife, and makes her cry. Then the crazy brother is transferred in handcuffs (irony there) to a mental facility/prison. When the sane brother objects and becomes violent, he gets punched in the gut.

On a side note, why are some people too stupid to realize that screaming at authority figures is NOT going to get them to stop what they're doing? It's only going to get you punched in the stomach.

This series is shaping up to be a real barrel of laughs. Not sure how long I can take it.

I haven't read any of Wally Lamb's books, but based on what I've read about them, they're big steaming piles of pretentious shit.

If you think it's depressing now, just brace yourself for what's to come. Every tragedy imaginable happens to these characters. How deep!πŸ™„

Thanks for the warning, but I canceled it after the first episode. Lord, that was dreary!

I actually find it really interesting. Yes it is depressing AF, but it’s really compelling. Frankly, I have always found Mark Ruffalo to be the most annoying actorβ€” but here, he is perfectly cast. He’s an incredibly unsympathetic person. I do want to keep watching it.

I hope you enjoy it. I just couldn't stand the negativity any more.

A much better series, imho, is After Life with Ricky Gervais. This deals with a man (Gervais) who is very depressed by his wife's death, and becomes a real asshole, while contemplating suicide.

I'm not a big fan of his, but this series is excellent (rated 8.4 on IMDb). I binge watched both seasons last night on Netflix. This was pretty easy, because there were only 12 half hour shows. A third season is coming.

All three of Derek Cianfrance's movies are incredibly depressing, so I was expecting that going in. I personally loved it but I can see how people would feel the other way. If you watched more you might stop referring to him as the "sane brother."

Not gonna happen, and I doubt it.

Agree with you. It was beautiful and realistic. The message was strong: If you want to be forgiven, you have to learn to forgive. Also, it was a good way of having a surprise ending that felt earned (unlike GOT).
