The final cut

Is it worth watching?

I mean give it a shot, after a certain point if you're not invested just stop. I mean objectively it is a bad film but for some reason i still enjoy watching it. Maybe it's just the style, I've always liked sword and sandal films and tbh this isn't particularly worse than any of the more corny ones from the 50's. The whole thing is just not at all historically accurate though and it is really just (as with a lot of Stone's films) his own personal story and moral tale put into a historical situation. Kinda just using historical figures to tell a story he wants to tell and using the genre as well as he can (only way I can explain dying Colin Farrell's hair blonde even though neither he or Alexander were blonde). I mean I even have the Ultimate cut on blu-ray. So if you watch it as some casual film with some battle scenes and melodramatic story maybe you'll have a good time, that's what I do. That doesn't forgive the bad elements of it but at least you can enjoy it. My only real problem is I think it needed more battle scenes, leaves out a lot of Alexander's major and important victories and also makes the Iranians look a little too week, although the battle scenes that are there are probably the only things in the movie that are well done.

I object to the ideas that "objectively it is a bad film." On the contrary, I think its reputation as such is unearned and that it's actually a "pretty good" film. Not great, not excellent, not a masterpiece, but still pretty good.

I'm not overly concerned about the historical accuracy and think it has little bearing on whether the film is well-made or not.

I will agree with you on one thing though: It needs more battles.

Alexander WAS Blonde, though?

I watched it last night and just posted some thoughts in another thread. But long story short, yes, I think it's worth watching.

Just understand there are fewer battle scenes than you'd expect considering the film is based on the life of a conqueror, and also be prepared to settle in for a long ride, as the movie is 3 1/2 hours long.
