Worst Movie Ever

Without exception, each character is the ultimate in stupid and annoying.
Nothing cute or attractive about it.

Can't believe they actually paid people to put this atrocity together.

You rate movies by degrees of "cute"?

reply

I rate movies by intelligent writing, engaging performances, breathtaking camera and directorial work, and emotional involvement. Doesn't everybody?

I got the impression these characters were meant to be "cute" on purpose. It didn't work. The characters were just annoying, like a five-year old out of control. Somebody needed a time out.

The pity is, a lot of viewers are going to think that this is a cool, clever way to behave.

intelligent writing
ESotSM won the Academy Award, BAFTA, London Film Critics, NBR, and WMA for Best Original Screenplay. No 2004 film received more accolades or recognition for its screenplay. The WGA also named it the 24th greatest screenplay of all-time.
engaging performances
Kate Winslet and Jim Carey received no fewer than 20 combined nominations from key organizations, guilds, film festivals, and critics groups for their performances in this film.
breathtaking camera and directorial work
The Aviator won the 2004 Academy Award for Best Cinematography, but lost Best Original Screenplay to ESotSM. The other four films nominated for Best Cinematography did not receive any acting, directing, or screenplay nominations. Director Michael Gondry received multiple nominations.

'Without exception, each character is the ultimate in stupid and annoying'

Well that's a major point of the film - even in the most loving of relationships you're going to get on each other's nerves sometimes. Aspects of your partner's you may have at first found endearing may become annoying.

Look out for the love in the film instead.

Whatever. To each his own. Bye bye.

You must love watching Disney movies.

I love this movie. It is not for everyone, so that makes it even more likeable.

I didn't like it on my first watch either. It's a drama/sci-fi/romance hybrid that's so confusing during its first half that it fails to captivate (and is even annoying). But, if you persevere, everything starts making sense by the midpoint, ushering in an entertaining and insightful second half. The movie's depth naturally makes it improve on repeat viewings wherein it's more understandable as you put the pieces together.

Viewers who complain that a certain person is too dramatic, selfish and high maintenance to put up with for more than a month didn't get the closing moral, which is both true and profound: Couples can (and should) realize the flaws of their mate, which they genuinely don't like, but it's "Okay." That's true love.

There are also unexpected peripheral gems on unethical behavior in a supposedly professional environment, secret relationships, discarding unwanted skeletons, and more.

Lastly, curvy, vivacious Winslet shines and it's nice to see Carrey in a serious role.
