How do the jetpacks work?
Why aren't they all just doing constant frontflips?

I like to think if I was designing fictional jetpacks I would make them more physically realistic and less cartoonish than the ones portrayed here. If you have complete artistic license, why would you make them so silly like they've done in this movie?
I'd look at existing jetpacks and use them as a template for a more compact stylized version of the real thing.
Is just a movie and completely unimportant knowledge to support the plot.
In that universe, they work, and that is all is that needed to understand.
One could ask thousands of unanswerable about many things in all movies.
It's fiction. Enjoy it. Or don't.
It was almost like they were using one of those over-water jet packs with limited capabilities.
shareThe water ones are a good inspiration. The thrust nozzles out over the shoulders is what works. A trimmed down version of that (without the water obviously) would be more realistic.

I'd have the pack on the back and u-shaped tubes extending from the top of it that rotate out over the wearer's shoulders, with vectoring nozzles on the end of them. And the tubes could pivot back behind the user when not in use so they're not too much of an encumbrance.
