Originally was to be a James Cameron + Arnold Schwarzenegger film

I would take James Cameron over Tim Burton any day.

Cameron really knows how to entertain an audience & keep them on the edge of their seats, while Burton prefers to put his gothic "artistic label" on everything he makes. His "brand". That's why he turned down making any of the Harry Potter sequels ... he would need to follow the same formula as the previous directors.

I agree, the original Planet of the Apes was a great film on it's own, but Hollywood does have an insatiable need to remake everything.

So IMO in the remake, Arnold would have been a much better choice in the lead than Marky Marc.

Like James Cameron, Arnold really knows how to entertain an audience. Yeah his acting ain't great ... but you have to admit it would have been a much more entertaining movie.

Plus perhaps the ending would have made some sense if James Cameron wrote it lol

If you don't like Cameron, fine. But don't support that argument by acting like Avatar was a rip off of Dances with Wolves or Ferngully or anything made within our lifetimes.

The story of an outsider turning on his people and sympathizing and allying himself with the native population is a much older story than that, and it was "ripped off" countless times before Avatar.

Instead of Arnie though I think a better choice would be someone like Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr, etc, someone about 35-45 who you could see playing an astronaut. I'd mention other actors that are not big stars but for a Cameron/Apes Remake I'm sure the studio would demand a big star in the lead. I'm kind of glad this movie didn't work out well though; it sort of helped paved the way for the better series we have now.

Heston had plenty of one liners in the original Apes movie and it still was great. Just take away the cheese/corn factor of Arnold's lines and he would have been great in a Planet of the Apes movie

at their core they're sci-fi / action flicks anyway, and that's totally in Schwarzeneggar's alley. he's an underrated actor and I feel as if he would have been far more of an interesting draw than Marky Mark (and I like Wahlberg but this role was just not good for him)

Even cheesy over the top "Predator" or "Total Recall" Schwarzeneggar I think would have been more appropriate for an Apes film than Wahlberg in this. but Arnold does have some range and has played other roles as well

at any rate we'll never know. Schwarzeneggar in an Apes movie and Nicholas Cage in the hypothetical Superman movie are some of my biggest 'what ifs' that I ponder in terms of potentially lost awesome film opportunities
