Female Jedi

Was the inclusion of female Jedi on the battle of Geonosis considered progressive at the time the movie was released since there had not been a female Jedi on screen before this film?

reply

There were female Jedi on the council in TPM, to which no one seemed to bat an eye.

Lucas has always been progressive with his films. Having the female Jedi in earlier stories was not about inclusion. It was showing what life was like for all Jedi before they were all nearly wiped out.

You'll recall that things were different before the Palpatine Imperial Era. The Jedi Order included anyone who was Force Sensitive, and that included females of many alien races.

If you look into "Knights of the Old Republic," "Star Wars the Old Republic," and the Expanded Universe books, there were definitely female Jedi, and some were very formidable against enemies of the good guys.

No, I think everyone took it for granted that there would be female Jedi. I mean, why wouldn't there be female Jedi?

What caught my attention was that there seemed to be a hell of a lot more male Jedi than female, which seemed a bit odd. But, maybe not.

They'd already hinted at the idea of Leia going on to train after ROTJ, and the EU had female Jedi as well. So female Jedi in the prequels wasn't a stretch or a surprise.
