The Jan de Bont version we didn't get.

But perhaps it'd been better?

There's not much to argue here...

Until I saw Godzilla 2014, I didn't think any Godzilla movie could be worse than the 98 version.

After that I figured no way in hell any Godzilla movie could be worse than Godzilla2014. Then I saw King of The Monsters..

This was going to be about the biggest box office hit EVER!

A mighty thud was heard at the box office as Godzilla, the most hyped movie of the summer, crashed and burned. With $18M in ticket sales, the Sony would-be blockbuster fell a hefty 59% from its three-day gross last weekend and an enormous 68% from its four-day holiday opening gross of $55.7M. Just as in the original movies from the 1950s, people were trying their hardest to get as far away from Godzilla as possible. Poor word-of-mouth and harsh reviews have clobbered the giant beast leaving it in critical condition.

I think people often forget how important Godzilla 1998 WAS supposed to be.

Sony spent a shit load..

I'll be honest, the Emmerich movie is a real guilty pleasure of mine. I even like some of the cast better than in the 2014 movie save Ken Watanabe and Bryan Cranston. But yeah, the earlier version sounds more ambitious at least. Kind of like a Stargate meets Jurassic Park.

Had a more accurate Zilla design than 98, the Godzilla we know and love is a lot more bulky, menacing and godlike especially the Heisei era, where 98 looks very iguana, T Rex and Giger Alien.
