Neil deGrasse Tyson's Top Ten Sci-Fi Films( Deep Impact is one of them)

http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/MrBlackJack/news/?a=101488

Deep Impact (1998): There have been many asteroid/comet disaster films. But this one took the time to get most of the physics right, and made sure you cared about all the characters in the film so that their prospect of dying matters to the viewer. And Morgan Freeman’s portrayal of the president of the United States may be the best ever.

Thoughts?

While I agree that Deep Impact is one of the best disaster films of all time, why should I care if Neil DeGrasse Tyson likes it?

reply

Because he is one of the most intelligent people out there. And you SHOULD care.

reply

He is not one of the most intelligent people out there. The guy has not contributed to any new discoveries. He is just a high profile "celebrity" personality figure that brings awareness and education to science through television.

There are plenty other highly intelligent people in the background who's names you will never know who are doing real science and contributing much more to the advancement of science than he ever has.

Neil deGrasse Tyson is a glorified tour guide.

reply

Tru dat, he’s a total a hole.

A common fault of movies like this is rampant scientific inaccuracies. If someone who is well known for being a physics space guy is vouching for it, it can't be too horribly inaccurate.

reply

No, a common fault of people is just accepting that a man is smart because they've been told he is.

If he is vouching for this movie chock full of inaccuracies, he can't be that smart.

Morgan Freeman is my favorite black president of all time.

There is no sound in space. There were loads of sounds from the space ship and explosions. Nope.

Next. When they're on the asteroid and the space ship lets down the ropes with carabiners, it wouldn't happen like that as the gravity is almost non-existent. They would have had to be ejected or wait who knows how long for them to come down. Just look at the Rosetta mission and you'll see more accurate timescales for objects with such low gravity.

There was also pretty much no expository on where the comet was in space or what the timeline was (the less you say the easier it is to avoid mistakes), at one point the space ship gets ahead of the comet and then as they're about to go into the crack for the final blow (sounds...sexual...) they turn around, face it, and then shoot into it. Definitely wouldn't happen that way, but, again, we have such few details who could really know.

There were many physical things the movie got right in a general way (the water receding from the shoreline being one), but it still got them wrong in timescale and regular scale. Oh well!

reply

So you can’t hear people talk in the space shuttle?

reply

You can because they pump oxygen into it. But floating right outside you wouldn't hear any sounds from the shuttle because there aren't enough particles between you and it for the sound to travel.

So yeah there is an explosion and you are located inside the shuttle then you would hear it. But if you're outside from a distance then you should hear no sound. I haven't seen the film in years but I'm guessing they did show it from a distance and still with the sounds.

Neil's a bit goofy there.

Interesting list. Film nerd that I am, I've seen all of them.

The Island is OK, but goes down an annoying track with chase scenes that were unnecessary and yawn-worthy. But it IS the best Michael Bey film I've seen... not that I'd take that praise too highly.

reply

I was pretty much with him on everything BUT "The Island".
1)Doesn't he know that Bay ripped off "The Clonus Horror"? I mean literally ripped it off in that the other movie sued him for plagiarism and won.
2) It's a Bay film and, although his movies can be entertaining, I don't think anyone, even Bay himself, believes he makes 'quality' scifi.
3) WTH!? He thinks "Gattaca" is the lower-budget cousin of a film that was a proven rip off of another? And, he has the nerve to say that after he said "The Day The Earth Stood Still" is great because it didn't need a lot of FX to tell the story. **eyeroll**

Come on, Neil! I know you have more sense than that.

The Island wasn't great, but it was WAY better than deep impact.

reply

Almost ANY movie is better than Deep Impact.

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar and doesn't.

reply

I didn't care about the characters and just because Morgan Freeman is black does not make his portrayal the best ever. Or even in the top 10. Tyson must not have watched many movies with presidents. The film was slow and not daring at all.
