Luke Perry's character in the beginning of the movie was annoying and a waste of screen time

What was the whole point of Perry's character that was an assistant to that archeologist in the beginning of the movie anyway?

he got jittery when the aliens came and shot at them for no reason and thats the last you ever saw of him in the movie. No descendants or anything

It was the 90’s and it was Luke Perry…that’s all the reason the casting director needed.

I thought they killed Luke Perry.

The whole point was his drawings of those aliens, which was similar to what is found today on some historic artifacts.

This is a great question, because I always thought his character was the apprentice to the priest, the same way that David was to Vito, and he was assigned to assist the professor in order to keep an eye on what he was doing.

The scene where he was pointing the pistol at the Mondoshawan and the priest kept telling Billy to look at him. "Look at me. It's me. Give me the gun." That implied some sense of existing trust or relationship between the two.

If that's the case, then his character, although not completely necessary to show for the story, did have his place to pass down the key.
