Couldn't Ewan MacGreggor's character at least ask her age if not show him her ID?

Before going to bed with her and then discovering much to his dismay that she is slightly underage? 😏

Also. Even IF as he later says, say prison inmates or someone else there, would not brutally mistreat him for it, and the prison sentence would've just been limited to him being locked in his cell, would he still be AGAINST going to prison for it?

Also. Was Diane REALLY going to tell the police on him if he refused to see her again, or was it just a gestive threat that she wasn't going to carry on with later? 😏

He met her in a night club and assumed she was of age.

So did we all when we originally watched it.

Definitely! Seeing her in her school uniform was a shock for sure.

Regarding her threat, I’m betting it wasn’t an idle one! She would’ve gone ahead with it I’m sure. It was better for Renton not to put that one to the test lol.

In the book the chapter was called 'The first shag in ages.' I don't think the big head was in control of things.

If he hadn't encountered this kind of thing before, yeah, it wouldn't be on his mind. He's in a place where a minor shouldn't be, he's not thinking about it, she looks old enough, and that's how he wound up in trouble. People aren't thinking about stuff like that in the moment. Although I bet Renton asked all future girlfriends. If he had had this happen to a mate, he might've asked.

He definitely would've still been against his going to prison for it. In his mind he was tricked. It's like statutory rape entrapment. He would perceive any punishment derived from his unintentional actions as unfair, so because he wouldn't think justice would be served, he wouldn't want to do time. Of course, a LOT of people who are VERY guilty still rationalize their bad behaviours, so there are a lot of people who deserve consequences who would not think that facing those consequences would be just. Should Renton go to jail for his actions? Well, maybe. Depends on the viewer's opinion, I guess.

Diane was playful, so maybe not, but I personally think she would have. She's showing a reckless disregard for Renton and his psychological care. The point of this is kinda her age, too, and she's just young enough that she might commit to a course of action that would be extremely harmful because teenagers don't think through consequences like that.
