Why say Jimmy was engaged?

Such a big deal was made of whose idea it was, and Mr. White takes credit. But it's never explained why? It's not good for fan appeal to make him sound off the market, let alone engaged. It came out of nowhere, too.

Yes. He is less likely to have as many female fans if he is dating or engaged. I’ve seen interviews with form popular boy bands and they often had to keep dating private.

I thought it was just a tribute to a similar chyron on TV when the Beatles played Ed Sullivan

White didn't take credit, BTW; he said the person responsible was "the same person who said you had class," i.e., no one they know, since none of them said Jimmy had class, either. And he doesn't.

Still, it was kinda dumb to make it a pivotal plot point if we're never told who's responsible.

On the other hand, the fact of the chyron isn't as important to the plot as Jimmy's reaction to it.

Yep, it was directly related to the Ed Sullivan show when the same graphic was put over a shot of John Lennon.

What he meant is that person who thought Jimmy was engaged also thought he had class, and was wrong on both counts.

It didn't really matter who was responsible as it was such a minor mistake. Anyone else (with class) would have laughed it off - not blown it up and embarrass his girlfriend in front of everyone in the way that he did.

I agree, Jimmy’s young, and just started out. Why make him “engaged”? His girlfriend was also very annoying, she should’ve been dropped from early in the movie so the movie would’ve been more about the band instead of her sulking.

Not sure what was annoying about her. Guy certainly saw the best in her and married her.

Because Tom Hanks is a mediocre writer
