David Thewlis as Simon Gruber

He was the original choice and after seeing him in Fargo I’d have loved to have seen how he’d have handled the role, he’d have probably been brilliant.

Jeremy Irons was great though.

Jeremy Irons plays better villains than Thewlis... he's on that Dafoe, Waltz, Walken, Malkovich, etc... level.

Thewlis is a fine actor too, but he's not in the same category in regards to the villain department.

reply

I disagree, his villain in Fargo was one of the best antagonists I’ve seen in film/television.

He was also amazing in Naked.

reply

I didn’t know Thewlis was first choice. He certainly looks the part, kind of a mini-Hans, but Irons nailed it.

How do you mean?

reply

He resembles Alan Rickman in a way that makes it very credible that they would be brothers.

reply

I agree completely.

By mini-Hans, you make it sound as though he looks like a "smaller" version of Rickman as Hans, which I don't follow.

reply

Well he is smaller too. Rickman has a massive head and is older whereas Thewlis has a smaller noggin plus is younger.
