They should have put less emphasis on the '90s

I always loved this movie but it's so terribly dated now.

I understand what you mean, but it had to emphasise the 90's, the whole premises was "Let's keep the Brady's in their 1970's bubble, and bring them into today!" They couldn't make the Brady's themselves a 90's family, it would have deviated to far from the TV show and the characters would have been nothing like their TV counterparts.

With a premises like that they had to answer questions like how would the 70's Bradys 'fit' into the 90's and how would the rest of society view them? You can only do that by emphasising the time period.

The movie was so hilarious because it took the 70's, good, wholesome family and took the piss out of them by bringing them into today's (at the time) society. When you're making a movie that emphasises how out of touch a family is with today's world, you have to emphasise the time period. It wouldn't have worked any other way.

I think the Brady's in the real 70s would have been more out of place than the Brady's in the 90s.

I know what you mean. I was watching it again the other night and the 90s fads in the film are so outdated today. It was amusing. Wonder how the 70s Brady's would handle the fads of the 2000s/2010s like Cronuts, Duck Dynasty, Gluten Free diets, Honey Boo Boo, Occupy Wall Street, Shake Weights, selfies, zombies, and Zumba. Marcia would be heartbroken Davy Jones is not with us anymore, that's for sure.

Selfies? People have been taking photos of themselves for decades. They just didn't give it a silly name.

reply

Yes, I know that. But it didn't really come in to fashion until a few years ago though when when heard "selfie this, selfie that, look at the selfie by so and so" in the press.

Whats so bad about a movie being dated to a certain era?

reply

No! I loved it!

So, I watched it in the 90's and it seemed like they were just making a contrast between the 70's and "today".

Fast forward a few years and yes, they inadvertently parodied the 1990's. They made it a 2 in 1 deal and it really makes the movie even better now than it was in 1995.

70's AND 90's Nostalgia wrapped into one movie. AWESOME-NESS!

Yes agreed! But I think the 90s parody was intentional too.

If anything, the producers shouldn't have used the tagline "They're back to save America from the '90s". It would have worked perfectly if they just removed any indication of the decade it's taking place in and just drop a 1970s Brady family into any era.

reply

now it's double nostalgic.

reply

Well, it can't help but be dated.

I didn't think it was dated, and I wasn't even born in the 90s. I think the only thing that would make it seem too dated is if you don't know who The Brady Bunch are.
