Janeway changed a lot

I've been rewatching the series, but started with seasons 4-7.

Now just started watching season 1 and blimey Janeway was really different at the beginning. A touch fanatical, a very clipped way of speaking and slightly aggressive.

They also made a point of showing her softer/emotional side whenever an opportunity to return home presented itself, or when she decides that the Doctor deserves more respect from the crew.

In later seasons she definitely mellowed and became more nuanced.

She let her hair down in more ways than one.

I don't know if you know who Katherine Hepburn is but she was an actress from the 40s and had the same horrible voice and demeanor. She was like an "asshole" who was supposed to be a "strong woman" but one you wouldn't want to be around or listen to.

I didn't watch this show until it was no Netflix because I hated the lead actress and her hairdo. Her voice was too much. I hate how men can be commanding by being cheerful and pleasant but women have to sound like nasally bitches. That was a byproduct of the Hillary Clinton generation.

Anyway, she did change over time ans dropped a lot of that.

I actually liked those characteristics of Janeway and loved Kate mulgrew as the captain. She was the perfect choice

I thought she was the wasn't great - hell, I didn't like most of the voyager cast. I think Tom Paris actor had potential - but the script/character development/directing screwed that up. I'd say Chakotay was played the best - with most charisma, but that wasn't enough. Jerry Ryan.... pretty but that voice+acting skills...
Tuvok - he had nothing on Spock - due to subpar acting skills/voice. I do appreciate though that he is probably the biggest ST fanatic out there, as he perpetually tried to create more fan-driven ST series than any other actor from any of the ST series.

All in all, this and Enterprise - are the two old series which I didn't see much of, because they were cringe-worthy.
The 3 new series are better in terms of cast, but the script+extreme wokeness.... put them into the same category.

Well, that's totally believable, very tough and military at the beginning, mellowing as life changed and the crew became more... familiar. And that word was deliberate, it's a variation on "family".

Which was confirmed in the totally awesome finale episode. At the end of things Janeway completed that character arc, and at the end of her life decided that discipline and hierarchy didn't matter at all, what mattered was people and relationships and love in all its forms. I don't know how much of the evolution of Janeway's character was deliberate and how much just happened naturally, but it worked.

Mulgrew was incredible in the role. I can't imagine anyone doing it better.
