Is it just me or was Scar less likable after he became King than before?

I did find Scar to be a lot less likable after he became King than before, before Scar was King while he was the bad guy he did have a lot of likable qualities in him, once he became King he became a character I hated.

He was a big ol baddy

He sure was, I did initially feel sorry for Scar when he was feeling sad about him not being able to be a King.

I felt sorry for all the other animals. He ran the kingdom into the ground and made everyone starving. That big ol meanie!

reply

Did Scar ever starve himself or was he the one eating all the food? He was definitely unfit to be a king, Scar really hit rock bottom when he attacked Sarabi for comparing him to Mufasa.

I rooted for Scar in "The Lion King" because it was ridiculous that Simba was next in line over him. He only did what was necessary to prevent his birth right from being ripped away from him by things that he had no control over. He was shown to be a bad king, but that was because Mufasa and his father only trained Mufasa to be King and he was forced to learn on the job. Also, he engineered peace with the hyenas. What could possibly be wrong with two opposing sides deciding to come together for the greater good?

No, it wasn't just you. Scar showed that he had terrible leadership qualities once he got what he wanted. It's one thing to trick idiot hyenas that will take a handout whenever possible. It's another to rule as a short-sighted despot over a kingdom that was used to its leaders being kind, benevolent, and competent.

Scar's evolution from being a "charismatic" villain that could woo foolish hyenas into doing what he wanted, and then doing a terrible job ruling isn't much different from how many dictators rise to power. They use lies and empty promises to get what they want from supporters who don't know anything about them, and then once they have the ruling power they wanted, they eventually screw over everyone, including the people who helped them along the way.

To the others, Scar was viewed as the typical bitter/distant family member that no one talks to b/c his attitude and bad habits.

But, NO ONE knew he was capable of murder. Mufasa naively believed that although they never got along, that Scar loved him deep down. That's why he pleaded for Scar to help him as he clinged on for dear life.

It wasn't until Scar said "Long lived the King". That he realized his brother was pure evil.

I felt bad for Mufasa when he looked at Scar saying "Long lived the King" and pushes him down, Mufasa falling off the cliff is one of the hardest scenes I've ever watched.
