Looking back at this movie as an adult I'm on Tonys side.

Those kids were brats and never gave his weight loss program a chance.

I still think he went about the wrong way. He should have made it seem like their idea to lose weight, not his. Tony was only doing the gig to make himself look good instead of helping the kids. He was willing to put them in great danger. Should have weaned them off using moderation rather than taking everything away right from the get-go. Worst way to make an impression.

This is a great childhood favorite of mine.

They are kids, he was trying to shame them constantly and he designed activities for them that just made them miserable. They did give it a chance, did you not see their tragic baseball game and sliding around on those things? They didn't refuse to do anything, it was just evident that it wasn't working and he wasn't acknowledging it.

Lol he had those sliding mats on a slanted hill so they would fall everytime they slid to the end of it, while he and his instructors where on a flat built stage doing it. So yeah its kinda obvious he wasn't really trying to help them lose weight but just torturing them for kicks.

Did you just happen to be looking at this page too? That doesn't happen too often.

I'll have to look at that scene again, I wonder if that was intentional.

Heres the scene

I mean he can clearly see they can't do it properly because of the slanted hill they're on, yet he keeps going as if he's oblivious to it. Just looks to me as if he's just trying to fuck with them rather than actually getting them to lose wight.

reply

Lol, I think that was just done to make it easier for the actors to fall.

Our zeitgeist says he was wrong. But that consensus has only led to a continuing rise in the obesity rate.

There are ways to help people lost weight without acting like an insane control freak.

Tony had a great idea, helping kids lose weight like he did and get rich doing that! But he really did go about it the wrong way and was bullying the kids like how he use to be bullied. Its clear Tony was the bad guy in the film. Dude was emotionally and mentally unstable! I can agree with Tony that Skim Milk is not bad!

I think although tony perkis is kinda of a jerk, you can't argue with the results. In fact he used to be just like the campers when he was a kid. But now after turning his life around by sheer willpower, he is in such good shape he is even competitor on t.v. shows like American Gladiators. He is trying to show the campers that even though he used to weigh over 300 pounds at age 12, after taping into sheer willpower, tony perkis was able to overcome his morbid obesity and do something productive in life. Tony Perkis truly is an inspiration to us all. He overcame adversity in his life at a young age and then uses his story to try to inspire those around him. Even though Tony Perkis comes off a like a jerk at times, he is only trying to inspire the next generation to do even better than him. I think Tony Perkis deserves the respect and admiration of the audience.

You have a good perspective of someone who overcome hardship and turned his life around. It is worth valuing and respecting such a good comeback from someone who was depressed and in a bad way at that time in life. That being said, Tony expected too much from these kids. Not everyone has the same willpower or ambition and you have to be able to identify who you are interacting with. People are different and come in all shapes and sizes, and they have different mindsets and even ways to approach things. Theres no one mold that everyone fits into. Sure the kids had that treasure trove of candy and snacks, but the fitness regimen was too hard too soon and cancelling lunch "due to lack of hustle" is pretty mean-spirited for an adult to treat a child. The original camp owners took too soft an approach, and Tony took too hard an approach to their weight loss. The kids needed a regimen that was more in the middle. Also keep in mind Tony had good intentions initially, but he lost his bananas near middle to end of the movie. He forced them to go on a wilderness hike with NO food and NO water, and then he told the campers "lets take a short meditation break and then we'll climb that 1,000 foot rock face over there with our bare hands and feet" WHAAAATT!!!!??? Thats straight up child endangerment at this point xDDDD he was the bad guy in this movie. He withheld the childs letters and read their mail, thats illegal. According to counselors and dialogue in the movie he cut corners financially at the camp. He invited the girls camp to a dance to humilate the boys, but when things turned positive and everyone began having a good time Tony literally cut the power and said "Dance is over, girls go home".
