I forgot how thick Rachel laid it on with Mark at the beginning

We all know how the Ross, Rachel, Mark thing will turn out and we know that Rachel never was interested in Mark while dating Ross but I forgot how blatantly she kind of threw it in his face at the beginning when she first got the new job and she found out Ross didn't really like Mark and like her with him too much.

When she gets the job, she's face to face with Ross but turns away to give Mark a big and rather long hug. Also, Ross wants to take her out to celebrate but she declines to have lunch (or dinner I forget which) with Mark.

It's as if she was trying to get under Ross's skin.

I don't think that's what the writers intended. But yeah, that's what makes it so hard to believe that Rachel didn't see what Mark's true intentions were.

all she was thanking mark for helping her get the job

Your post is reminding me of a line in Seinfeld, after George gets upset that his girlfriend took credit for giving Elaine the big salad. "All I did was hand someone a bag"

Sorry, it's totally unrelated to the post, it just made me smile 😀

Or... she was so utterly uninterested in Mark that the idea that she had to reassure Ross or temper her behaviour around Mark, simply never occurred to her.

A normal person would have anticipated that Ross would be jealous of Mark when he heard how she met him and that he may be getting her a job. And indeed, Ross is jealous. And the jealousy continues in all the things that Ross sends to Rachel's office.

Mark points out to Rachel that she has a jealous boyfriend.

Is there an ignore list around here anywhere?

I really wouldn't call not giving long, deep hugs to another man and not going out to lunch to celebrate with another guy instead when your boyfriend is trying to take you out to celebrate "tempering your behavior".

I don't give long, close hugs to young, pretty women in front of my wife whom I barely know. That doesn't take lots of effort on my part. You know who wouldn't like me hugging women? My wife. Do you know what is wrong with that? Not a damn thing.

If my wife wanted to go out to dinner to celebrate my new job but I said, no, I'm going to go out alone with the young pretty girl, that wouldn't make my wife an ass for not being pleased, that would make me an asshole for doing that in the first place.

Checkmate.

Long deep hugs (this is where the laughing emoji would go if the site had them).

And what exactly is she throwing in his face? That he doesn't own her?

Next thing you know, they'll be letting women vote.

Boom!

and we know that Rachel never was interested in Mark while dating Ross. . .

Actually, we don't know that. All that we know is that three weeks after the breakup, Rachel rejected an extremely crude pass by Mark. We don't have any information on what would've happened if Mark had romanced her a little.

We also don't have any information about how Rachel felt about Mark when he got her the job and they started working together.

Do you really think it likely that she started off with no interest in this dreamy guy with whom she shares a passion as an alternative to Ross? I am not suggesting serious interest; just that it would be strange if it didn't occur to her that she has an alternative to Ross right there. To consider that is a rather normal human reaction.

Rachel should have been scourged as punishment.
