Would this have worked better as a James Cameron movie?

I felt tinges or Aliens at the end, but obviously nowhere as good at capturing that action/horror feel. It made me wonder how it would work as a Cameron movie. I think he’d fix up the poor casting and we’d see a stronger movie. We’d lose the water vibrating on the dash (a Spielberg touch) and other great moments however.

I'm afraid that a shift from adventure to action/horror would result in more non-animal behavior of the dinosaurs. There's a good chance they'd become dino-slashers. Much like how they turned the spinosaurus in JP3 into a stalking monster. Even the t-rex in the novel (which was more horror-based) showed some weird stalker/slasher behaviour.

I'd rather have a little more dialogue in this movie. Maybe more emphasis on the fact that this park was doomed to fail regardless of Nedry's sabotage.

Who did you think was miscast?

reply

The girlfriend of Sam Neil and the granddaughter. Some of the other casting was questionable, maintenance guy.

Really? I thought they were fine. Honestly I am glad it wasn't rated R or else I wouldn't have gotten to see it on VHS when I was 10. Was too young to see it when it came out.

I'm assuming this thread was made because it recently came out that Spielberg just barely beat Cameron to the rights for JP.

To answer the question in the OP, it would not have worked better as a James Cameron movie and Cameron himself has said Spielberg was the right director. JP is such a special movie precisely because of the sense of wonder it elicits and the way it's fashioned into a family adventure that everyone can enjoy.

Turn it into a survival horror film and it loses its charm.

reply

No I just thought he would be a good fit.

For one thing, the kids would've been much less annoying.

reply

No, Spielberg knew when to dial it back just enough to make it less darker than it needed to be.
