4 hours & 31 minutes long

No thank you

It was originally conceived as a mini-series for TNT but when Ted Turner saw what he had he decided it needed to go to theaters.

If the runtime seems onerous to you, just watch it as it was originally intended to be watched and spread it out over two or three nights.

Yeah, one of the great things about home video formats is that you can break up a movie into as many viewing sessions as you want. Though these days people will binge-watch an entire TV season in a couple of days. So a 4.5-hour movie shouldn't be a big deal.

reply

True enough. My wife and I typically watch the expanded Lord of the Rings / Hobbit over a couple of nights each. I don't see the problem.

reply

Yeah, for sure.

I still think that it's best to take a movie in all at once if possible, but it's not essential. You can watch it 30 minutes at a time if that's the best you can do.

Gettysburg is a film that takes some patience to get through, but I feel it rewards that patience. Just today in fact I got in the mail Gettysburg and Gods and Generals on Blu-Ray. I still haven't seen Gods and Generals yet. I see the director's cut is almost as long as Gettysburg! I'm sure I won't get it all done in one night.

I confess I couldn't get into Gods and Generals partially because there wasn't as much focus on Chamberlain and the rest of the union and also because they had the same actor for Stonewall Jackson as they had for General Pickett in Gettysburg. So I just kept seeing Pickett instead of Stonewall Jackson. it doesn't help that they even made him look and sound just like Pickett too. Still, I wish they would adapt the Last Full Measure into film. I am surprised there was never a movie about Lee and his army until Gettysburg.

I pity people like you...
