Dated + annoying.

Loved in my teens and high school years but as you age it becomes almost embarrassing . The sterotypical stoner ( slater) in particular I thought was funny and cool while I was 15 . I think when I was 16 and became a stoner and tripper myself it became noticable how annoying and how false the character is . Almost a Jeff spicoli rip off . Strange though , I still enjoy " ridgemont high" and penn's character . Any agree with me ?

Nope. D+C isn't perfect by any means, and I am much more a fan of introspective drama over broad humor, so D+C is waaay better than Fast Times. Fast Times is downright stupid, but stupid funny the way Dumb And Dumber is stupid funny. If that is someone's lane, they can stay in it and enjoy. I think Dazed touches more closely what it was like a to be in High school back then, the style (at least to me) seems very natural and realistic.

And I don't give a flip whether Linklater has won any Academy awards. Galileo and Oscar Wilde were put in prison for archaic reasons, so not receiving an Academy award is no indictment on one's artistry.

reply

Fast Times is nothing like Dumb and Dumber, are you high?

reply

I hope so.
And by golly, The Night of the Hunter has nothing to do with Cape Fear.
How dare I mention the two in the same breath?

Both Fast Times and Dumber, in my view, engage in dumb humor for it's own sake.
I'm not a scholar of D&D as I avoid it, but Fast Times has a sweet soul, but it's essentially a film about being dumb.
If you have a more insightful take on it, either share or don't.

Dum and Dumber is a slapstick comedy.

Fast Times at Ridgemont is a coming of age comedy.

They're two different things.

reply

That's fine except that I don't see it that way.
Yes, they are different films with different stories, but to me, they both are trafficking in Dumb, what's it's like to be observing Dumb people. I find D & C much more compelling than watching Spicoli lock horns with Ray Walston, although there is a bit of comedic genius going on.
D & C isn't a comedy, and it's much more Coming Of Age than the dumbness portrayed in Fast Times.
At least, that's my opinion, and I always felt I was lot more emotionally smarter than my peers, so take that as you will.

reply

D&C is a slacker movie. It's a different style. Fast Times was a high school movie for the MTV generation, but D&D is clearly slapstick with a bit of crime-caper and romance thrown in, it's a another kind of comedy subgenre mix.

This movie aged like a fine wine. I actually despised it as a kid because I was too young and just didn't get it. As I got older I consider it a classic. People will always reminisce about better times and this movie captures that feeling perfectly.

I've always enjoyed the Last Day of Senior Year, Keg Party in a field type movies. Unfortunately I've burned myself out on Dazed, I'll watch certain parts when its on Cable but I've lost some admiration. I think when it came out, being from Texas & partying just as Hard as these guys on a day to day basis I had a real connection and would watch my VHS copy I stole from my cousin way too often.

reply

classic? Your standards must be low then.

reply

Go watch more Twilight you power bottom.

reply

never saw it; Godfather, Goodfellas, Jaws are classics, not this "slice of life" nonsense.

reply

Yeah somebody got stuffed into a locker in Highschool. You seem like a lot of fun.

reply

Your mom is dated and annoying.

reply

Been there done that.
Right on both points.

reply

I graduated in 76 and most of the characters remind me of people I knew back then. Still one of those movies I stop and watch when it comes on TV.
