Of all the unrealistic things...

Sly Stallones character who is a climbing expert and has arms like tree trunks, was unable to hold on to a woman's hand for more than a few minutes? (albeit he was upside down)

reply

This guy did it for 3min 17sec.

But my understanding is sly wasnt supporting his own weight (which would be substantial) he's supporting hers.

Although having said that I don't know where he was planning to go from that position. Nobody can really come and help them easily

reply

Well, she wasn't supported by anything, and his gloves were slipping, and he was trying to keep himself anchored while still holding on to her, and plus she was waggling and wiggling, which makes it even harder to hold on to someone.

So yeah, that actually does make sense, especially if he was already somewhat tired from the climbing that they had previously been doing.

reply

Good points. I'm still trying to figure out how Ace Ventura couldn't hold onto the raccoon.

Most movie tropes that exist solely so the movie can happen, are unrealistic and do not hold under scrutiny. It's a shame writers aren't more intelligent, but that's the world we live in.

That is not necessarily the MOST unrealistic thing about that whole rescue effort, there are so many others. How and why does a woman that was able to climb to THAT place without problems (which is pretty unbelievable to begin with) become SO NERVOUS so suddenly, and never before?

Why aren't they using more advanced technology than just a wire you have to climb yourself?? What? A rescue effort that MAINLY RELIES on the people's OWN STRENGTH to get rescued? How?

No winch? No ropes attached to everyone so you can pull them efficiently into the helicopter? No ladders? Only very flimsy, seemingly plastic, easily-bending locks or whatever those things are called?

Why is Stallone's character just holding her, why isn't anyone helping, why isn't there a MECHANISM and TECHNOLOGY to help them? What kind of rescue helicopter is this?

Also, WHY doesn't the woman use BOTH HANDS to grab 'Gabe''s hand and basically use him as a mountain to climb up?

Why isn't ANYONE moving the helicopter to a safer location, where they're not DANGLING ABOVE 4000 feet of air? Why is the rescue effort SO BAD in all possible ways, JUST SO the movie can happen?

Nothing about that rescue is realistic at all, and I am not any kind of rescue expert. I am sure, however, that if we researched thoroughly the normal rescue helicopters, efforts and systems, we would find even more things wrong with all this.

No one would try to rescue someone THAT flimsily! Would YOU? Come on, even semi-dumb kid could come up with a better and more functional and secure rescue effort. This movie shows 'Everything that can be done WRONG with a 'rescue effort''

I mean, why doesn't ANYONE try to help anyone? No one pulls anyone towards the helicopter? Why does the helicopter have to be SO FAR AWAY anyway?

reply

Also, how about SECURING someone in more ways than one?

Heck, they learned to do that in theaters of all places, long, long time ago - secure every lamp and other heavy object that's raised above with more than ONE method, just in case one method fails.

But not when it comes to HUMAN LIFE? Lamps are more important than humans? WHAT!?

This makes NO SENSE whatsoever. In my opinion, even with drunken half-competent team, it is just _NOT_ possible for the events of that opening to happen, there's no way a woman would just fall and they would not have any kind of contingency plan for any of that. There would be a damn ladder, multiple layers of security, the helicopter would be above the land/cliff, and as close as possible, so if anyone falls (and they would still be secured by other layer(s)), they would still only fall on the ground/rock/whatever, and still have a chance.

WHY the F would the helicopter even ... yeah, better to not think about it anymore. This director is so gimmicky, he even put the finnish flag as the parachute.
