Why did Scott Baio leave?

Q: Scott Baio played the young doctor assisting Dick Van Dyke on "Diagnosis Murder" when it first began. Why did he leave the show and what is he doing now?

A: Baio had other TV ventures in mind when he left "Diagnosis Murder" in 1995. Starting Sept. 11, the former "Happy Days"/"Charles in Charge" star returns to series TV in the new sitcom "Rewind." The Fox show will face stiff competition from NBC's "Friends," which also is scheduled Thursdays at 8 p.m. "Diagnosis Murder" begins its fifth season Sept. 25.

Oh, thanks. I kind of like Jesse better.

I like Jack, but I like Jesse a lot more. I think Jesse played well off Amanda, too, so they were more fun to watch as Mark's sidekicks. They had character chemistry.

What an idiot to leave a hit show that went on another 8 years when Scott who has minimal talent did very little afterward. What a screw up to leave steady employment.

reply

Not the first (most notable are MASH stars Wayne Rogers and McLean Stevenson), wasn't the last.

Your assessment of Scott Baio is a bit unfair. He is very talented. It's just that he was used to doing comedy sitcoms.

He also guest starred in The love boat & fantasy Island.

You may think that but I couldn't possibly comment--Francis Urquhart

This blind item about Scott Baio is troubling if true:

This white actor's racism (which has been reported before) never ceases to amaze me. In his presence, you get an immediate racist vibe. He can't make eye contact with black men or women and appears very uncomfortable when he's in the company of blacks, so much so, it's noticeable. This is the same actor who we reported on last year. He told a black playmate at the Mansion. "You sure are beautiful but you look mixed, you're not mixed with black are you? I hope not!" A white female he once desired was dating a black NFL player. When he saw the athlete at a club, he broke through the crowd and confronted him, "You haven't slept with her yet, have you? The NFL player looked at him like he was crazy. This actor also got upset, when he was on a series, a black stagehand was visited by his white girlfriend and her best friend. When the stagehand went to the men's room, he overheard the white girlfriend tell her friend, "What a great endowed lover he was." The white actor was infuriated and after that day, he made the black stagehand's life miserable on the set. It's even been rumored, when he goes to high-end department stores, he will tell security that blacks entered the store before him and they may want to keep a eye out in case of shoplifting. A few years ago, he dated a olive skinned woman who he thought had Native American blood in her. When she informed him that her mother was white but her father was bi-racial. He went ballistic and broke off the relationship, threatening her, "I have to let you go or I might commit a hate crime against you." He also made his recent significant other get rid of a close black female friend. It's rumored that this actor allegedly produced porn under a alias when he was practically destitute between acting jobs. When he did get a job on a series, he hardly spoke to his black co-star despite being friendly to other cast members. Hints: He's appeared on two TV series'. Scott Baio

This white actor appeared on a long running TV series. This sitcom is one of the most successful shows in television history. This actor was given his own show when the series was cancelled. The show lasted a few seasons; his career took an nose-dive and never recovered. This actor has a secret; he has an intense hatred for African-Americans. So much so, he makes donations to white supremacist websites. He also has a reputation for being a lousy lover, his nickname in Hollywood is: ‘The one minute man.’

BS, he's a conservative, that doesn't make him racist. Stop lying and trying to smear him.

If I'm racist, don't think I would have directed shows like 'The Parkers' and 'The Wayans Brothers' or worked 41 episodes with Victoria Rowell on 'Diagnosis: Murder.'

I remember both Scott Baio and Shari Belafonte where both on and I distinctly recall Scott looking at Shari like he was disgusted by her. It was such a hateful, loathsome look that it stayed with me to this day. At the time I just thought maybe they had a falling out or maybe that is just his face but with him finally revealing over time what kind of hateful nasty ass racist he is, I know now it to be what it was.

reply

I'm sure Scott made a huge pile of money doing "Charles in Charge" and "Happy Days." Maybe he just got tired of the grind of doing another weekly series, especially a one hour, single camera drama. He was accustomed to doing half-hour sitcoms, which are much easier in terms of time demands.

reply

I've read the explanations and I'm not convinced. Over on Dick Van Dyke's page, it mentions he threatened to quit Diagnosis Murder at the end of its second season. Instead, it was Scott Baio who didn't return. I had also got the impression that there was bad feeling between Scott and Victoria from some of their scenes. Also, again on Dick's page, the trivia section states he's still friends with Charlie and Victoria. There's no mention of Scott.

So, I'm thinking that Scott was unpopular on the show and it was Dick delivering an ultimatum that finally go him off the show. I have no evidence of this and I would be interested in anything anybody has got to say - without the usual adolescent insults that pass for discussion on IMDB. Thanks.

From listening to Dick Van Dyke’s autobiographies I get the distinct impression he truly dislikes Scott. He purposefully mispronounces Scott’s last name consistently. I love Dick Van Dyke, he is smart, incredibly gifted, and kind hearted, but there is a defiant dislike for Scott.

Scott Baio has pretty much retired from Hollywood with most of the Cast left from Happy Days resenting him for it.. The Dude simply managed his $$$$ well, not to mention, he left Hollywood and California all together and moved to Florida

reply

i don't know, but i wish he hadn't left. He was gorgeous, i liked him much better than that little short blonde bloke who replaced him.

reply

I liked Jack. He was much more confident than Jessie and I appreciated that. I thought Scott was great in the part ... but he had the chance to star in his own series. It was a gamble.

reply

I loved the show, but it was never as good as when it was new. The chemistry between Scott Baio and Victoria Rowell was so believable, and the focus on Dick’s hospital staff with Michael Tucci and Delores Hall was great. The stories were breezy and not too intense. I’ve heard Scott can be prickly, but he’s so cute. I’ve also heard Victoria is a strong personality, but she was just beautiful. I know the show had to change as it progressed, but love rewatching the first two seasons.

reply

Not me. I really prefer Jesse to Jack. I grew up watching the later seasons where Dr. Jesse Travis was around. I couldn't stand watching reruns of the first 2 seasons. I almost thought they were a different show.

reply

I agree the early seasons were the best.
