Let's face it naysayers.

"Unforgiven" is the best western ever made. Followed closely by "High Noon." And, then, pick a Clint Eastwood film.

Yes, "True Grit," "Once Upon a Time in the West," "Tombstone," "Stagecoach," "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre," and (television) "Lonesome Dove," but, c'mon people. Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, Richard Harris, Francis Fisher, and Saul Rubinek, written by David Webb Peoples, directed by Clint Eastwood. Really? And some of the great lines in western movie history.

I love this film. I must watch it any time it's on. The cast was superb, right down to Richard Harris' wonderful take on English Bob. But I don't know if any western or any movie can be called best.

And while I like High Noon, it must be one of the simplest movie plots of any genre. Honestly, it would have made a great Gun Smoke episode.

Yes, but I knew a very smart guy once, a journalist and movie buff, who pointed out that there are almost no wasted lines at all in "High Noon." Every word seemed to mean something. I watched it again after he told me that and concluded he was mostly correct.

I don’t think it’s the best western ever made but the finest from the last thirty years, probably.

Good movie; but not best Western imo. Not even Clint Eastwood’s best Western (Good Bad Ugly)

Tombstone, The Shootist, The Searchers, and a few others are greater

I don’t think it’s possible to say there is a single greatest Western. those are all great movies. I would also add the wild bunch and a few others to the list.
