Pandering trite back then and laughable outdated movie now

When I watched it back in the day, I found it sort of watchable because the exploitation of grunge was not done to death and indie type movies were not done to death. The music also helped it made it watchable back then evn if it still felt very Hollywoodish. But it still felt fake back then and it feels so cringeworthy to watch now.

What's so cringe-worthy about it? Solid cast, decent laughs, hilarious spoof of a grunge rocker played by Matt Dillon. Ok, so it's no masterpiece but it's a fairly decent, inoffensive film.

I agree. I liked this film back in the early 90s, now I find it cringe-worthy.

It seemed sort of hip at the time, but now its clear it was shamelessly selling Seattle lifestyles.

I just read that actually it was filmed in 1990 and the studio shelved it. In 1992 the execs only decided to release because the grunge explosion basically dropped the entire marketing concept right into their lap. I have to give Crowe a little more credit now, I always assumed he got the idea AFTER Nirvana set off the grunge atom bomb in Sept 1991.

And yeah, I enjoyed the movie back when it came out, even though it was a bit corny. But I just watched it again for the first time and it did not age well in my eyes.

I just heard something on one of the SiriusXM channels, a new show apparently. Crowe admitted some of the stuff was a bit old but because the studio shelved it. Many of the bands, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains were not as big when the movie filmed. So those aspects might seem old.

And there is my favorite scene, a gorgeous Bridget Fonda on the roof:
"I've always been able to do this.
Break up and never look back.
Being alone,
there's a certain dignity to it."

Pan out to her and her phone dragged all the way from her apartment (corded!)

The problem for me is it has nothing to do with the Grunge scene it is just a kind of back drop but the characters are mostly mainstream yuppie types. I tried to watch this again recently and couldn't get through it.

A 1990's version of St.Elmo's Fire?

Snore. I always play a movie before I fall asleep. This is one of the few that actually made me fall asleep lol. I don't say that about a lot of movies. The only parts I cared about were with Bill Pullman, but even he couldn't keep me invested.
