So what happened to Renfield?

Apparently he initially went to Transylvania then after Dracula turned him insane Harker took his place. But how did he get back to London? What happened in between Renfield going to Transylvania and Harker taking his place?

I read the novel several summers ago and I don't remember Renfield being a solicitor in the novel so it seems this was something that was changed for the film?

He was probably someone who Dracula ran into while acquiring his land in London and was bitten to be used as a spy perhaps, and promised eternal life.

reply

No, Renfield was insane before Harker went to Transylvania. And the film says that Harker is Renfield's replacement.

reply

Oh we are talking only about the film. Well then he went to Transylvania and Dracula put him under a spell and he went back to London the same way he came but mad and too imbecilic to complete Draculas bidding.

reply

Ok thank you makes sense. Dracula hypnotized Renfield so he would make the deal go through but Renfield got committed instead. Yes I was referring to the film, I know it wasn’t like that in the novel.

I wish they had shown us what happened to Renfield and we only get one scene with him and Dracula

He rented a car in Transylvania, drove across Europe and took a ferry over to London

Thanks

Haven’t read the novel in years, but I believe it’s implied in the film that Dracula turned Renfield into being his follower/servant by showcasing and sharing his powers/abilities and made promises to him that if he followed instruction he would be granted something similar, and as such, sent him back to London expecting Renfield to complete the deal. Renfield was able to make it back but lost his mind in the process as he was clearly overwhelmed by whatever happened to him/shown to him, in Transylvania and was committed before the deal could be completed. When Harker arrived Dracula didn’t take any chances and simply got his signature on all the documents required to make his deal go through and mailed it back to London, keeping Harker as his prize.
