Why did Newt drown in her cryotube ?

Was it because Carrie Henn was demanding too much money for the role and wasn't chosen ?

reply

Carrie Henn was 17 by the time Alien3 was being made, and as she was in a cryo tube, she wouldn't have aged a day since she was put in it, that and Alien 3 was set only a couple of years after Aliens, so Carrie would have been too old... By then she had decided to become a teacher anyhow, so there's a good chance she simply wouldn't have been interested.

The brief time that we saw Newt in Alien 3, she was played by Danielle Edmond.

No more like sigourney weaver wanted to be the sole lead of alien 3.

reply

I read that Michael Biehn demanded and was paid more money for the use of his likeness in A3 than he was paid fort the entire Aliens movie!

reply

yea he was really hurt that his character was killed off. Early in Alien 3 production he was promised the lead role in Alien 3 then sigourney weaver was gonna star in Alien 4 but then after so much production problems sigourney weaver up and started changing the script and wanted to be the single lead. It was a pretty low move to kill off newt and hicks to the fans of the time. I remeber going WTF in the theatres. I had heard the rumors but refused to believe them.

I don't know why sigourney weaver did all that. It was her idea to die in the film, her idea to not have guns either. :/

reply

It never really bothered me about Hicks and Newt.

I've always really liked the movie just as it is but it's interesting to read what previous scripts had in store for the characters.

I didn't realise Weaver had so much input?

reply

Yea plus fincher was just a music and comercial director at the time so he was easy to push around. :(

reply

I think the no guns idea is great though.I mean Aliens gave us guns, guns and more guns.

It allowed the film to take a much different direction and the characters had to become creative.

I always feel sad for Fincher.

reply

I was still in junior high so I wanted more guns at the time. Did you see Alien 3 in the cinimas?

reply

No I first saw the theatrical version on tv via Sky movies.
There were a few big questions but I liked it overall. When I saw the Assembly cut it became a very different film for me.

reply

Any idea how the eggs got on the surlaco? That was the big question of the day when it first came out.

reply

Funnily enough I was watching a YouTube video about that earlier today. With all the different theories including the Queen somehow depositing an egg there or a facehugger carrying one onboard!

Bishop says "it was with us all the way" so we have to assume something off camera happened.

reply

Indeed...

For some reason the writers and director of Alien 3 figured they would make it as inferior to Alien and Aliens as much as possible. Could you imagine just for a minute that it's the early 90's, and you've just watched Aliens for the first time, and you head to the theater for Alien 3 all hyped up and expecting another incredible movie....

Instead, disappointment begins to hit immediately into the movie when it's revealed that a plothole egg remained on the Sulaco and is stuck at an angle above the cryo beds (a question not even answered until the other disappointment: Aliens Colonial Marines as there is NO way the queen put that there herself, the Cryo beds were decks away from the hangar deck), Newt and Hicks are both dead, Ripley is on her own with a bunch of evil men stuck on a prison planet (with strange accents mind you), and eventually Ripley herself dies?

(The theatrical release has nothing on the assembly cut, but the person watching in the theater has no idea this is even going to come out one day.)

I couldn't even have began to imagine the thoughts of the audience as they left the theater, I only saw Alien 3 in the early 2000's. They went in expecting Alien or Aliens quality, instead that did not happen.

reply

I saw it at the time and the only thing that pissed me off is it was cut to death. The AC is a better movie for reinstating cut scenes (particularly Golics fate).
Is it as good as Alien? No. But it's not a bad movie. I personally put it on a par with Aliens.

reply

The director's cut is an okay film, but still it does not compare with the first 2 in terms of quality. I think one of the things going against it was the fact they made it a really 'depressing' films and that was off putting to many. Alien despite being a terrifying horror film was not depressing and Aliens was more focused on action and had a very 'feel good' ending. Coming off a feel good ending with extremely opposite type of feeling I think hurt the film overall. I should have done more to work its way into being a more sad and tragic film coming off the more upbeat ending of Aliens. Of course the filmmakers were somewhat limited by not being able to use Newt or Hicks since they did not get those actors back.

reply

My favourite used to be Aliens, but over time my opinion has changed.
I know a lot of dislike for this movie comes from the (senseless) loss of Hicks and Newt and in my opinion this could have been averted by simply putting those characters in a different escape pod. Once they'd killed off those characters it opened the movie to being picked apart for every little flaw. The obvious one being how the hell did that egg get on board? But you know what? At the time not many people mentioned that! It was more about the senseless deaths of Hicks and Newt and the overall depressing mood of the film. Funnily enough the movie was quite well received here in Europe.

not enough bang bang shooty shooty for you?

reply

Hahaha, don't get me wrong--as a unique setting, Alien 3 hits the jackpot, and it actually has some really good atmosphere. I just can't get over that egg stuck right above the cryo chambers which is the entire premise of the Sulaco fire, thus: Alien 3.

reply

yep thats definately a plothole of the highest order.
Didnt seem to bother me when the film was released but it does now . a bit . i dont let it ruin it for me ...

reply

The story had gone through so many rewrites I don't think anyone gave a danm about that big plot point.

reply

well , i guess with the conclusion of Aliens being "All the Aliens are dead" it would take some pretty creative thinking to a) get one back , and b) have it be a problem for Ripley.

reply

At this point even a silly "Bishop" brought two back before picking up riply and newt would have explained enough. instead they put a single egg thats the smallest in the series leaving us to speculate that one hugger was able to impregnate 2 people which seems implausible cause in every other film face huggers die right after impregnatio0n.
