Hannibals Appeal

Let’s face it. A big part Of Hannibal's appeal is that it’s played by Hopkins who’s good looking. If it were anybody else nobody would care.

It's not that Hopkins is good-looking, objectively speaking he's nothing to write home about. At that time he was a smallish middle-aged man with a totally ordinary bod and a face that was... okay.

No, what made him work as Lechter was sheer charisma! He was magnetic, you can't take your eyes off him, so much so that he didn't need to be good-looking.

reply

I've always thought that the manner in which he was able to use his eyes was fascinating. He seemed to be able to convey the blend of brilliance, cunning and insanity which was Lecter very effectively that way.

That and his deep, hypnotic voice. And he had impeccable manners. When Clarice arrived, he was standing like a gentleman who was waiting to greet a lady. And...Anthony Hopkins is good looking (subjectively speaking!).

reply

Yes, his speech was very measured and precise.

I thought someone might say this but a big part of all this IS that he is good looking. Look at Brian Cox does anyone really remember him or if he was played By Woody Allen no matter the charisma, manners, built no one would care. Let alone win so many awards.

Hopkins has made many movies and I‘ve seen many women find him attractive. He has that old English Man thing going for him and strangely it comes across in Hannibal though Hannibal is supposed to be Lithuanian but Ive met some Lithuanians and they are nothing like Hopkins. He is more of an English Man. Of course all the other thing things enhances him. His method acting, voice, etc... but a big part of it is his looks.
