How the heck did this not get a string of sequels?

Great characters, fun story, so much potential for further exploration. Basil Poledouris delivered an awesome score. This could have been the Die Hard of Westerns, with Tom Selleck returning for several sequels. What happened?

The story was complete. He went home at the end of it.

The story of Die Hard was complete, yet John McClain managed to get pulled back into future missions.

A long time ago, I read that they had plans for at least one sequel: "Quigley in Africa". It would have been great! I also would have liked to see Quigley in South America and Quigley in Arabia. South America actually had a historical scenario similar to the extermination of the Aborigines by the evil land baron, as seen in this film. A Romanian man named Julius Popper went to Tierra Del Fuego to mine gold and with the help of his private army, began to exterminate the local Selknam Indians, who were among the most primitive people on Earth, going mostly naked and living in crude brush shelters in an extremely cold climate.

Didn't do enough $$$$$ (unfortunately).
