I love these movies..... (There's a but coming)

and 3 is my favorite, but.... the hoverboard scene at the end with Doc and Clara is probably the worst effects in the whole trilogy. I'm embarrassed every time I watch it. And it also doesn't hold up to the technology of the hoverboard. It's very clearly shown in BTTF 2 that the hoverboard is propelled by humans (unless, of course, you have a Pitbull), but in this BTTF 3 scene, it's self-propelled as Doc stays on it fully and it just zooms away from the train, and way higher in the air than it should be.

Fair point about the being higher in the air.

But the "being propelled" by human isn't completely strictly only by human. Its the same as how a skateboard is propelled by a human. Ride a skateboard holding onto a fast moving vehicle and let go.... the power of physics would be enough to propel you away. Same as a hoverboard.

Yeah but it’s a rad concept. The CG is fine for 1990.

It is a crappy effect, and I'm just talking from the standpoint that it was far too obvious that when Doc was holding Clara, he was actually standing on firm ground and 'shopped onto the hoverboard. Even an expert skateboarder wouldn't have been able to keep that impeccable balance as he both held her and kept his full attention on her by staring into her eyes as they zoomed off.

Perfectly fits established hoverboard tech.
Inertia from the train pushes them forward .

The board is doing a controlled descent , like a parachute , due to its "hold you 6 inch off the floor" motors being higher than that.
