6.6 - are *beep* kidding me!?

Blasphemy. Movie is great and Keaton's in TOP form here... 6.6 my ass... C'mon!?

You Suck...now deal with it.

If it's any consolation, I gave it a 9. And I'm not sure I've ever rated anything 10.

I watched this film at age 13 back in 1988, and remember thinking it was pretty boring. Since then, starting around age 18, I did drugs of all kinds for over 20 years, but quit back in 2008. I recently decided to watch it again (age 44), and it is like a time capsule. I felt like i was back on my grandma's couch watching it, but this time with so much more life's experience under my belt. Amazing acting from Keaton, and a must see very relatable film if you've ever been an addict, and then recovered.

Clean and Sober is one of the best movies about drug addiction.

Its really a very genuine and authentic portrayal. The acting is top notch. Kathy Baker is amazing.

Imo they really haven’t made a good accurate movie about addiction in decades.. Requiem for a Dream is a bit over the top

reply

Compared to Clean and Sober, Requiem for a Dream is just a trashy stylistic exercise. Every character is an unlikeable drug-addled stereotype with zero nuance. The strength of Clean and Sober is the large array of well written characters, none of which were drawn as all good or all bad. Morgan Freeman's character Craig was the closest this film got to a portrait of someone whose dark days were behind him, but even still it's clear that he had been to hell and back. But Keaton steals the show with his manic energy which, despite the underlying seriousness of his situation, is often very funny.

Agree with all of that. Clean and Sober gave us very realistic and human characters . We all know people like that . It doesn’t need to try and be sleazy like Requiem - it doesn’t need that

Drugstore Cowboy was another pretty realistic movie about addiction but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen it. What do you think about it?

reply

I thought Drugstore Cowboy was wonderfully entertaining, not nearly as serious about drug addiction as Clean and Sober but terrific in its own way. I gained new respect for Matt Dillon's acting after seeing him in this.
