Freeman deserved an Oscar

Sadly Freeman lost the Oscar to Sean Connery in The Untouchables, Which Connery was okay. But Freeman excelled in his role, giving the best performance of his career perhaps. It was a travesty he lost.

I do like Morgan Freeman but I don't think he deserved the Oscar as much as Denzel Washington in Cry Freedom. Sean Connery wasn't oscar worthy at all in my opinion. He only won because the academy wanted to give him an Oscar before he got too old. And because it was a big deal his characterwas shot to death at the end.

Agreed.

I have yet to watch Street Smart but have always found a comment from critic Pauline Kael amusing... she said that Freeman is so magnificent in such a lame film that his achieving this performance within it was equivalent to sustaining a performance of King Lear inside Gidget Goes Hawaiian.

I shall watch this film, finally. Of the other nominees my choice would easily be Albert Brooks in Broadcast News, but he really should have been in the lead category. Connery was fine but it was a career tribute award through-and-through.

what really? what??? no way. when i read the post i thought hypothetically he deserved an oscar if he got nominated of course. i didn't think he got nominated. really? that seems really hard to believe as the first time he was acknowledged was driving miss daisy or lean on me i thought. and also because crime movies don't seem to usually get nominated at least not in the last 20 years. also this film while a great film i don't think is the kind of film that would get appreciated by the oscars. 'cuz really if you think about it the whole journalist doing this expose on a pimp is not really a strong story idea. it just doesn't seem realistic or important of an endeavor.

but everything else about this film is great. the production values are kind of thin though. it feels like you're watching a b movie because of this but then again maybe in the '80s this kind of production values was the norm and the best.

yes, this is the best performance i've ever watched from morgan freeman. it's sadly not the way he acts anymore. now he most of the time just falls back on his caricature acting, he phones in just about every performance. just like samuel l. jackson.

i was amazed by how great morgan freeman is in this film. he is so powerful and scary. oh my gosh, he gets totally in character and totally submerges himself in his role to the point where you don't see him acting it's just this scary guy you want to stay as far away from as possible. he's so intimidating and disturbing.

reply

I agree. The scariest scene has to be when he puts a knife to Punchy's face and threatens to cut out one of her eyes. Totally douchebag character.

reply

exactly oh my gosh that scene was disturbing! oh my gosh when he threatens her and puts the knife close to her face that was so scary and disturbing. he was so menacing. i actually hated his character after he did all those things in that scene. that's great acting to make you hate a character the way he makes you hate his character, in a real way.
