Is it just me or was the "We ain't found *beep*!" remark a bit over the top in the combing the dessert scene?

I thought the afro-pick part was actually pretty funny (one of the few redeeming jokes in this movie) but then it was immediate ruined with a super stereotypical line that's way beyond OK (and should not have been acceptable even in 1987). How did this get through editing?

Fun little fact: the actor playing the Spaceball soldier who said that line was none other than Tim Russ, who later played Tuvok the black Vulcan on "Star Trek: Voyager."
