It doesn’t seem plausible they would have been friends.
shareConsidering the movie as a whole, I really like that they did that, alluding to her becoming friends with the Brodys (or at least Ellen) in later years, possibly realising that her son's death was never Martin's fault. It gives a nice sense of continuity between 1, 2 and 4.
You could almost be fooled into thinking the film was going to be thought provoking and decent before the shift to the Bahamas.
The early portions of the film are well-handled and tasteful. Upon further reflection, it’s possible Mrs. Kintner would have helped Ellen through the grieving process, having experienced a similar tragedy in her life. These small details make the film such a re-watchable classic.
shareWorth noting that Polly is also at the house. Perhaps she was good friends with Mrs. Kitner and over the years she told her that the Brody's were good people, and not only was Alex's death not Martin's fault, he was the only one who did want to close the beaches. Add in Martin twice risking his life to kill the sharks, and eventually she forgave him, and became close friends with the family.
