I think he thought it was a pun because frogs are usually thought of as green even though they come in all colors of the rainbow. My favorite color of frog is brown. They're all that color, right after they been fricasseed in a frying pan.

Back then filmmakers and studios were open to more risk. Now everything has to be board approved, pass focus groups, be politically correct, and churned out assembly line style.
