christian bale was absolutely amazing in this and I can't recall ever having seen a better performance by a child ever is this the best one?

He was only 14 years old when the movie was made.

I don't know if it was the best, but he was really good.

He's one of the best actors out there in general. He's been good ever since he was a kid and still is even now.
