Ariel wasn't worth it.

I don't understand why Ren was so infatuated with Ariel. What are her redeeming qualities? That she's pretty? She was classless, rude, unsophisticated, boorish, promiscuous, and an attention whore to boot. Even Ren pointed that out for her! Daddy issues to the max! She deserved a moron like chuck. She was not a "catch." Her mother was far more ladylike and well-mannered. So what if ariel can spout off a few lines from poetry? She is probably the worst love interest in any 80's teen flick. We see that towards the end, that she tries to "turn things around" but she's damaged goods at this point.

I agree with you 100% she's sickening skinny, not pretty, obviously screws anything with legs and evidently conceited. Www I'd rather bang Rosie O'Donnell than her..I just threw up in my mouth!

I kind of have to agree with you. Although she did soften up a little more towards the end, Rusty, Edna, and Wendy Jo were much nicer. I would say Edna was much cooler than Ariel; she could drive her own motorcycle.

She was an ‘80s type. Tall, lanky, skinny, blondish, boyish. Standards of beauty have changed a lot since then. Daryl Hannah is another example. She was the hottest thing in the 80s, dated JFK Jr and Jackson Brown, always cast as the hot girl. But her type of looks don’t fly in this era. Blond and skinny is bland now.

I did not like her either and tbh, I didn't find her pretty and she had a boyish body to boot.

She did seem mental, trying to get herself killed twice.

So, let's put on our thinking caps for a minute. Your from Chicago, you're acclimated to the bustling, fast paced, big city life. Your pop culture horizons are waaaaaaayy far out there, compared to the slow and relatively boring location of Beaumont, that you had no choice but to move there.

Ren is a pretty smart guy, and doesn't show any signs of petty arrogance, or looking down his nose at the hillbillies. He would be open to dating one of the nice girls, but he's also high strung, addicted to adrenaline, and gets a rush from heavy metal music, rage dancing, and driving fast. Ariel, the outwardly wild one, is right in Ren's wheelhouse.

She's only wild until she goes home. Then suddenly her character turns into someone completely unrecognizable. It's bizarre. I get that she's supposed to be repressed by her father, but seriously? It's just not believable that one person can have two COMPLETELY polar opposite personalities like Ariel does in this movie. Makes me think she's either a shitty actress who couldn't find a happy medium for her character or shitty direction. Either way: Shitty.

And yea, she may have been pretty but she KNEW she was pretty--walking around with her nose up in the air and swinging around her Breck hair. In fact she appeared to think in her head that she was even more attractive than she in reality was. All of these things actually make a person UN-attractive. Time would not be kind to a chick like that. Imagine her getting old and losing her looks lol. "You don't even LOOK at me!" (massive violent eye roll)
