Did Anyone Else Find Claire Huxtable Arrogant, Stuck Up And Bossy?

Claire was always telling Cliff and the children what to do every episode. She acted like she could never be wrong. She would always point out Cliff's flaws and boss Denise, Theo, Vanessa, and Rudy around!

reply

Maybe, but I can tell you one thing: you would NEVER want to piss her off.

I can get why some people could be annoyed by Claire, I think it's part of the WAW (i.e. Women Are Wonderful) phenomenon that has been going on for the past few decades. In which, Claire was not her husband's equal but her superior. Cosby was never the stereotypical "dumb dad" (he was a billion times more intellect and sophisticated than Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin) yet he appeared to be the "dumb dad" compared to his wife. The Cosby kids could question and even make of their father but hardly ever when it came to Claire. So even though I don't hate Claire I can completely understand why she can come off as off putting to others.

Yes, indeed. Maybe I can understand that a beautiful and successful lawyer, who managed to some-freaking-how raise five mostly well-adjusted kids, and keep a perfect house without any help, at the same time as she had an awesome career, can become a little bit conceited. But ugh, Claire is probably my least favorite sitcom mother. Okay, so she was the worst sitcom mother until "Two and a half men" came and gave us Judith Harper in 2003. But that would still put Claire at No 2 on my bottom list... She was so damn arrogant and full of herself, and she never seemed to have any flaws. Except for that she had that nasty attitude of hers and was a real control freak, but that is not such flaws, that will make you relate to her, but only further reasons to dislike her. And since my own mother is pretty much Claire's polar opposite, it is very hard for me to stomach her...

Intelligence and purity.

reply

She was very bossy and a bit patronising towards Cliff.

reply

She took a very condescending tone with them, for sure. And even when she lectured them she had that regal air. That constant formality made her come off as a phony.

reply

I never liked Claire much.
I found her 'too uptight'. In some ways, she was too lenient with her kids & in others she was way too strict.

She liked the kids well enough if they were entertaining her somehow.
But when real parenting was needed she acted annoyed, like she might break a nail or muss her hair.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

There was one episode where the Huxtables were were posing situations where they would wonder if they could come and talk to Cliff and Claire about and one was where a hypothetical question was posed about what if Vanessa went out with a 17 year old. Claire got so stern toward Vanessa even though Vanessa assured everyone that it wasn't true and it was just a rhetorical question. But the point is that even if it were true Claire was judging some person she didn't know just because of his age. In fact later on Vanessa ending up marrying someone who was 12 years older than her.

So that's worse than what people did in the 1600s, locking them in stocks and letting other townspeople insult them with families watching freely in public...

She was a smug know-it-all who always had to be right, hated her attitude, unfortunately nearly all wives on sitcoms have been just like her since the early 90s. There was one good episode where Sondra really told her off for bringing her baby to a hair salon when she wanted her to stay home to keep away from germs, it was nice to see her get put in her place.

reply

Indeed! But yes, I kind of liked it when Sondra told her off that once.
