Cheesy montage dates the film

I was rewatching the film for the first time in decades and was surprised to see the cheesy musical montage segment (having to do with Tony’s marriage and growing business success) like the kind that has been parodied in South Park. I guess at the time the film was made, it wasn’t yet considered a cliche.

reply

Why is it a cliche?

Because it has been copied or parodied on South Park or the Internet?

It has an 80's look and feel. That's because it was released in 1983.

I liked the music. The scene too.

Reread my last line. I allowed for the possibility that it had not yet become cliched by the time it was produced. But in retrospect, IMO, it is cheesy and dates the movie. You are, of course, free to disagree vehemently.

Are you asking a question or just making a statement? lol...

It worked at the time, the soundtrack and that scene were a great part of the movie. You just had to be there to experience it.

A statement of opinion. No question marks appear in my post.

I’m sure the montage worked at the time and may even have been admired and imitated, contributing to the device becoming a much-parodied cliché.

I don't watch South Park, can you post a link to a parody from that show? I might have seen it before but can't remember.

So many films have been parodied though. One of my favorites is the Downfall parodies of Hitler. So funny...

It’s called “We’re Going to Need a Sports Training Montage”. You can find it on YouTube.

there's a similar montage in Team America too (made by the same people who did South Park)

The movie is 40 years old. What do you expect?

The score by Giorgio Moroder is great on my opinion.

Some films hold up better than others. I think Scarface holds up well, on the whole — with one glaring exception.

I do not like the song during the montage but otherwise it’s good.

the only bit from the montage that adds weight to the film (but probably wasn't intentional) is when Sosa's talking to him on the phone and laughing. It's quite chilling when rewatching knowing what happens between those 2 and how their final phone call goes.
