Do you think Frank would have lived had he played the phone call differently?

As in, play dumb, something like …”What, what are you talking about, who is this, wtf are you talking about!?!”, and then openly shared with Tony the nature of the call.

Since Tony planned the call, isn’t it reasonable to say that he wasn’t committed to killing Frank and was only going to, pending his reaction to the phone call?

Yes/No & Thoughts?

I was thinking this too. In the back of his mind he should have been prepared for that the moment Tony and the others walked into the room. Tony still didn't know 100%, until the reaction to the phone call. The first time I saw the film, I thought Tony was going to spare him when he said he wasn't going to kill him, and was relieved for a few seconds. Only to have Manny shoot him.

Manolo, choot dat piece of chit.

So did I, it’s hard not to have at the very least, a bit of a soft spot for Frank.

For all the integrity that Tony claimed to have, I thought Frank had more. And it was Tony who made moves on Frank's lady that led to this. While nobody is innocent in this business, Frank seemed like a more easygoing, friendly guy. Tony has some good aspects, but did a lot of things behind Frank's back. And it was Frank who gave Tony his big break.

I think so. It definitely seemed like Tony wasn't going to kill him until he knew for absolute certain. Even after the phone call it doesn't seem like Tony is 100% committed to killing him until Frank admitted he was behind the attempted hit.

I'm not sure he would have shot Mel either had Mel not admitted he knew about the hit as well.

This movie was a remake of the 1932 version, so Tony had to kill his boss and take the reigns

For sure, just looking for thoughts on the scenario played out in an alternate reality or something.
Hypothetical what ifs given what we know about the thought processes of our characters….

Tony may not have killed him then. However Frank did have the most motive to kill Tony, and Tony knew this, so you never know

I think that Tony suspected Frank, more than suspected even, but that he was also hopeful that it wasn’t Frank. I think Frank could have weaseled out of it if he wasn’t so complacent and had some street smarts, which he didn’t, imo. He handed his guilt to Tony on a silver platter.
