I think everything except the story and characters are great. The effects music and world it creates are fascinating. And it's a great sci fi template I can see inspired tons of later work.

However the movie is undeniably boring to me (and I didn't have that problem with 2001) the characters feel flat minus Roy. And the fact everyone is gonna die in 3 years (if you believe Deckard is a Replicant) really makes the plot feel meaningless. The romance likewise feels forced.

And everytime I say this people talk about the supposed depth of it. You mean that 1 speech at the end Roy gives? Or the cliche "what makes humans human?" Question the movie brings?

Yes, because so many Hollywood movies ask deep, philosophical questions about what makes humans human...

It's not that deep. I could probably get the same message from I Robot with Will Smith. "What makes these machines different from us? What makes a person human?"

It just makes you think "these replicats are persecuted, why should any being be persecuted? We all have a right to life. What makes a person human? Is this cyberpunk hyper capitalist world what were heading towards?"

It's a good message sure but I glimpsed all that in 5 minutes that felt like 50. And then people will bring up that Tears in the rain speech. Which is great but it doesn't make a boring garbage movie great by itself.

I think the questions the movie asks are deeper than that, but I've watched it many times, so I've picked up on things many might not have; Another thing, you had to be there in 82 when the movie was released and most people more or less had the same reaction you did. There was a minority of us movie nerds who saw something in this movie that it took the rest of the movie nerds of the world a decade to realize. I know the movie's not for everyone, though. I have friends who think it's boring, or too dark, or moves too slow. Even Harrison Ford didn't like it, claiming he played a detective who didn't do any detecting (which is also not true, but he had a terrible time making that movie, so I understand his frustration).

The film is beautiful. The dialogue is extremely well-crafted in places. Not just the "Tears in Rain" speech but the dialogue between Roy and Tyrell also, for example. The coming together of all the sets and effects, the quality of some of those effects and how some of them stand out for a film that is 40 years old, the craft of everyone involved etc. is amazing. The soundtrack is amazing.

The plot is barebones. The characters too.

Blade Runner is not about either of those.

I agree but that's because I've read the book Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep?

So having read the book first and then watching the movie I've never really cared for the film at all minus Harrison Ford as Deckard. Because I knew Harrison played the role in the movie it was very easy to picture him in my mind while reading the book.

As for the moron below that said to go watch a Michael Bay movie instead how about you get a more original rebuttal.
