Xanadu: How NOT to Film a Musical

The 1980 musical Xanadu has some really bad cinematography.

Good points. I'd never given that much thought.

The director does political documentaries now, where he doesn't have to worry about things like aesthetics quite so much anymore. Probably a good move.

Wow! The music to this movie was great, the stars were legends or soon to be legends, rollerskating was huge, Olivia was stunning, the script was weak, but it possibly may have worked if the cinematography was better done.

Most of the musical numbers were shot in this huge, dark, empty space, which drained all the joy out of the song and dance.

It always gave me the impression that someone spend the production design budget on cocaine. I mean, wouldn't that explain everything wrong with this movie?

Oh man, that's funny. That could very well be the case. I still occasionally enjoy watching this film due to how incredibly gorgeous Olivia Newton John is, but it's a complete mess and then some. This was sadly the end for Michael Beck. Which is a shame because he was so good in The Warriors. The most troublesome part of this film is that this was the great Gene Kelly's final film role!

This is why it's dumb to just post a link with no description, no narrative, no discussion, no talking points.

The video is no longer available. So your post amounts to just:

With no further elaboration nor explanation to go along with it, this is a terrible post and provides little value. Any external link should be used a reference for details, not the main source of discussion on a chat board.
